- About the Author
“I speak to you tonight, my very dear friends, not as citizens of the United States or Great Britain or Germany or China or any single nation, but as citizens of the world. For we have suffered together, we have toiled together, we have wept and worked together for one great and noble end—the healing of a broken world. Tonight I speak to you all as one people, one race, one generation dedicated to transforming that which is dead and dying, and destined by our fate and our common fortunes to make a world where men and women can live together in harmony.”
Mark Beaulieu was the very essence of calm self-assurance. The words flowed like honey, and even hardened media commentators were visibly charmed by his remarkable charisma and brilliance. He never missed a line, never dropped a phrase. He was perfect.
“You and I have survived a time of tragedy by the very will of God who has given us a new mandate to unite as one, as brothers and sisters around the world. We are one, we are the world—we are the family of all mankind.”
“Tonight I stand before you in the name of a new order of unity and cooperation in the world and a new alliance of peace that will affirm what you and I believe. No more divisions that separate us. No more wars that destroy us. No more starvation or famine or pain.
“No longer can we stand by silently while honest men and women are being denied the dignity of work. No longer can the fruit of our toil be taken from us by men driven by greed and corruption. No longer can we condone the exploitation of our suffering so that only the corrupt and greedy can live.
“What I bring you tonight, my dear friends,” he continued, “is a message of hope for a world dedicated to peace; and thus, I am announcing the formation of a new coalition—a world Union for Peace. Instead of the United Nations, which has failed time and time again to deliver the unity it has so often promised, I lift up to you the Union for Peace. The UP, so named because it will lift us UP—UP from poverty. UP from slavery. UP from repression. UP from tyranny and war.
“In coming days we will work together to abolish the engines of war, to eliminate the armies, navies, and air forces that prey on weakness and exploit our pain. Security is not a remote or regional concern, but a common bond, and instead of giving allegiance to single nations with private armies, our worldwide Union for Peace will guarantee that peace is universal. A world at peace . . . a world united . . . a world that is one.
