- Note on Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Because you have kept my command and stood fast, I will also keep you from the ordeal that is to fall upon the whole world and test its inhabitants. I am coming soon; hold fast to what you have, and let no one rob you of your crown. He who is victorious—I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God.
“Oh, Father, what are you saying to me?” implored Heinrich. “I must know, Lord. Make your voice clear, so that I can obey, and do exactly as you desire!”
Words from the Scripture began to come back to him, and as they did, thoughts tumbled forth out of his brain so rapidly that he could not piece them together in an orderly flow. But he knew that in some way God was beginning to answer his prayer for clarity.
Satan’s synagogue… that was not the true church, the true nation of Israel, but an utterly false one, not claiming to be Jews as the verse in Revelation said, but claiming to be the true descendants of an “Aryan Christ.”
False Jews… Satan’s synagogue… but they shall know that you are my beloved people… true Jews… the true church… the true people of God!
I will keep you from the ordeal that is coming…
“Who, Lord… who will you keep from the ordeal?”
I will keep you from the ordeal… they shall know that you are my beloved people… my beloved people… my beloved people…
“Lord, what would you have me hear? Open my ears, Lord, open my eyes.”
Hold fast to what you have… what you have…
“What do I have, Lord… how will you keep them from the ordeal…?”
I have set before you an open door… an open door… open doors… open doors… many open doors…
As he walked and prayed, Heinrich had retraced his steps and had now come to the edge of the wood. Out before him in all directions spread his land, the land of his fathers, land that he loved. Straight before him, on the hill rising out of the plain, sat his beloved Lebenshaus, with Der Frühlingsgarten spreading down the slope in front of it toward him.
He stopped.
Gazing upon it all, his mouth was just voicing the quiet words yet again, “Open my eyes, Lord…” when all at once an expression of incredulity broke upon his whole countenance.
Eyes wide, he gazed around, first at the garden, then at the house, with sudden amazement.
“Of course… that’s it! Hold fast to what you have… I have open doors, my house has many available doors, many open doors for God’s beloved people to help keep them from the ordeal that is to fall on the whole world. How could I have not seen what you were trying to show me before! Oh… Father… thank you!”
He broke into a run, across the field, and back toward the house.
