- Note on Dietrich Bonhoeffer
He’d been on the track of their clandestine activities ever since slamming the door shut on Finkenwalde. Despite the arrests that had followed, his sources confirmed that the training centers were still active. Once he had located them, he remained frustrated in that his chief quarry was still not there. He’d decided to let them continue their little game for now. Hopefully the fellow would turn up eventually, and he still had his man in place at Köslin. If not, he would shut them down later and throw the whole lot in prison!
There were rumors that he’d fled the country.
They’d gotten onto his trail last year, but too late to keep him from getting his sister’s family to Switzerland. Then the information dried up and the trail turned cold.
Jews! He should have smelled it! Right in the traitor’s own family! He was indeed an enemy of the state, and for more reasons than Korsch had first suspected. He’d probably left Germany with them to save his own cowardly skin!
A moment more Korsch stared down at the useless pages in front of him.
Suddenly his arm swept angrily across his desk, sending every paper on it flying. A series of oaths erupted from his lips as he sprang from his chair. The subdued fury at last exploding, he strode back and forth across the room with angry step, face red and eyes flaming.
He hated them! As far as he was concerned, the Jews could stay. If he had his way, they would get rid of the Christians instead. At least the Jews kept their religion to themselves. But the Christians were always bent on their self-righteous mission to evangelize the whole world with their absurd notions!
More than anything he hated to be outsmarted by their self-serving piety!
He would not be outsmarted by them! Especially not by this slippery young pastor and teacher and author who had become his nemesis.
He walked back to his desk, picking up the thin volume that had just come into his possession that morning and which had triggered this latest outburst of passion.
Wherever he was, the fool continued to write!
He opened the book to the first page. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity, he read to himself.
The mindless drivel made his stomach sick!
In a sudden motion the book flew across the room, crashing against the opposite wall. With all the restrictions they had in place, how was he able to get such seditious idiocy into print! Himmler and Hitler and all the rest of them were so fanatically obsessed with the Jews, they allowed altogether too much laxity toward these outspoken Christians! When he found him, Korsch vowed to himself, he would not only shut down every teaching facility, he would forbid him to write so much as another word, under penalty of life imprisonment!
