I ran inside. I grabbed a robe from the changing room, then charged upstairs. I didn’t see Kaylee. I yelled for her. Allison picked her head up, she’d been lying on a big couch with Leo where I couldn’t see them. She said, “Shh, you’ll wake the boy.”

“Where’s Kaylee?”

She pointed to where the bedrooms were. I yelled for Kaylee again. She rushed out, straightening clothes, looking disorganized. “Call 113, right now.”

“Now?”

“Right now, this second.” I saw a phone. An actual landline. I grabbed it. Pushed the buttons, shoved it into her hands. “Tell them there’s been an accident. A drowning. Tell them it’s an emergency. Get here fast. Very fast. Maybe they can save him.”

Lev appeared from the same direction that Kaylee had come from, tucking his shirt in, trying to push his hair back into place. Had Kaylee had sex with him, or been toying with him, and was he all hers now? Was that still part of the equation that I was trying to put together? “You,” I said. “I think he drowned. Go try to save him. Go, go, go.” He didn’t have much English, but he seemed to understand. As he ran out, I barked at Kaylee again, “Tell them it’s urgent. Urgent. Come fast.”

Allison came up to me. “What happened?”

“He was drinking. A lot,” I said. “He had this thing, macho, Russian thing, about jumping into the frozen pond. I tried it once, I thought I was having a heart attack, that my heart was pounding right out of my chest. Scary. Well, I guess it did him. He didn’t come up. I tried to get him up, but he’s too big, and the water was too cold.”

“You did it, didn’t you?”

“Accident. I didn’t do a thing,” I said. “There are some men coming. With Pavel. He went to get them. They want me. We have to delay them, stall them. Until the police get here. We need them to protect us. Me, and you. He wanted to take you, and they may, too.”
