They were in the old city, where a sea of people flew kites from their rooftops in celebration. Waves of rainbow-coloured kites stretched across the blue sky. Rajjo had her kite in the sky as well. Their eyes met as they tugged at their respective kites soaring in the air, passion quivering between them. She was finally going to give him the kiss. He stared at her with an answering dark hunger and passion. The sky changed colour, like a tailor layering one beautiful satin after another on an underskirt. Just then, Harsh’s guard came rushing up on the terrace with a phone and a feeling of dread took over. It was his wife, Upasana.

His face hardened, he turned away from Durga’s keen gaze. A vehement feeling took over, she wanted to scream and cry, all she did was let go of the string, her kite disengaged, unanchored just floated in the sky. They exchanged one last look.

‘I will be in the room, I have to leave within the hour.’ He turned away from Rajjo and left her standing like that, much like the kite floating aimlessly in the sea of kites up above.

‘Good bye. You go, I will stay. We were supposed to stay another day. I want to fly another kite,’ Rajjo heard herself say out aloud with a defiant look on her face. He held her gaze for the longest time and then stepped forward to hold her close one last time. He kissed her forehead, with a long wanting sigh, he whispered, ‘Till later…’ A yawning grief sat in her heart as she looked at the colourful sky and wept in agony, staring at her colourful kite still trying to make way in the sky and fading away from her sight. Eventually it was a floating speck in the sky and then it was gone, swallowed by the giant blue expanse.

Standing alone on the beautiful terrace where they say angels sat on a full moon night, Rajjo was beginning to feel the rage within. His absence was unbearable to her. She tried to calm her heart with the beautiful moments of togetherness. Soon his voice took over her mind. Her feet started moving in a circular fashion, revolving from right to left around the heart. She remembered that beautiful day when she spotted a rose outside her window, the dawn was special. Harsh surprised her with a trip – he wanted her to experience something – the Sufi dervishes. The place and time had a silken gauze over it, what she remembered clearly were the dervishes in their wide skirts moving in circular motions, they were spinning their body in repetitive circles. Symbolic imitation of the planets in the solar system.
