- About the Author
Both men heard their radios buzz at the same time.
“Inspector Torres, a red estate car has just pulled up outside. Two men got out and are busy collecting stuff from the boot. One of them fits the description of our man.”
Torres gestured to Martin to shut the front door, which was currently ajar. “Okay, don’t make a move, but let us know as soon as García goes inside the building. Detective Martin will be able to confirm his identity as soon as he enters the apartment. Keep your eyes open for any trouble in case those goons from before return to the scene. Once he enters the block, give it a few seconds and follow him in.”
Pedro placed his fishing gear and a small overnight bag onto the pavement and gave his younger brother a long bear hug.
“Aldo, say hello to those boys of yours and tell them their Uncle Pedro will be over to see them very soon. Also, thanks for sorting out the trip. I promise I will pay for the next one.”
“Will do. And, brother, don’t worry. I know things are tight for you and there’s not been much work about during the last few months.”
The two men broke off their embrace and Pedro smiled at his younger brother, who represented the only family he had left. In that moment, he decided he would break his own golden rule. He would take some cash from the hidden stash in the lock-up to pay for their next fishing trip. He would also buy some special gifts for his young nephews.
“Thanks, Aldo, but next time it’s my turn and I promise we’ll do it in style.”
Aldo turned away and opened the door on the driver’s side of the Focus. “Until then, take care of yourself, Pedro.”
Pedro nodded to Aldo, collected his belongings and walked away from the car towards the entrance of the block. Torres’s radio buzzed into life.
“The subject is on his way into the building. He should be entering the apartment in the next minute. All quiet out here, so we’ll follow him in.”
Torres and Martin were standing in the middle of the open-plan living room, their guns drawn.
“Understood. We are in position and ready for his arrival.”
