  34. About the Author

She glanced at the time—there were clocks all over the place. She wasn’t sure she liked that, either. John told her this place had been turned into a home of the future, though all the kinks hadn’t been ironed out yet. She was okay with some of it, but she liked her privacy. Which brought to mind her father, of all things. She had a slight understanding of his aversion to all the technological changes in the world. If she were honest, she didn’t like that female voice in the shower. While she’d used the Siri app on her cell phone and on her laptop, that was useful. Getting a response after talking out loud in the shower? She didn’t like that at all.

Seeing the time and knowing that her mother would be awake making breakfast or at least coffee, she took her cup of espresso and cell phone to the living area. She used a remote to open the shades. She had a perfect view of Seattle’s Space Needle and the city lights. All is calm, all is bright, she thought, thinking of one of her favorite Christmas carols.

She dialed her home number, knowing that her mother would have that little moment of wonder, a question of who was calling at such an early hour because they did not have caller ID, even though that technology was old hat by this point.

“Hello,” came her mother’s cheery voice.

“Morning, Mom,” Lauren said. “Just wanted to call and check in.” She didn’t really, but that was all she could come up with at this hour.

“Lauren, you’re up with the chickens. Are you feeling all right?”

“Yes, this time difference is messing with me, but I’m fine. I just wanted to call, check on the kitties. Did Brent manage to get them home without any trouble?”

“Yes, and they’re as snug as a bug in a rug right now. I’ve put their beds in the den; they’re loving the warmth of the fireplace, though we’re being very careful. Your dad is tickled pink. That was a good move.” Her mother seemed extra chirpy this morning.

Lauren knew that her furry family would bring joy to the house. “I think so too. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner. I’m glad you all are there; I’m not sure how long I’ll be in Seattle.” Especially given the complete about-face that was now her life.

“Do your job, and don’t worry about anything here. We’ll take care of everything.”
