Jude had painted a picture of two unhappy boys, both bullied by their father, one also bullied by the other. It was hard to believe the frightened child with his myriad fears whom Jude had described, was the same Derek Jameson I’d met this weekend; a man who, despite his disability, exuded strength. And then there was Bob’s one and only fear, his fear of snakes. Which no one who knew him had chosen to mention, despite the strange circumstances of his death. The two had to be connected.
Then I remembered Jude’s allusion to the tricks the twins played on each other when they were kids. That they still played on each other as adults. But while Derek’s tricks were funny, Bob’s were mean … I think they still did it; played tricks on one another, a bit of one-upmanship. Bit childish but there you go, maybe that’s twins for you.
I took my phone out and for the first time I did a search for Derek Jameson instead of Bob, annoyed it hadn’t occurred to me before. In many ways Derek had existed in his twin’s shadow. I found a piece in an online cycling magazine with the headline Amputee completes Alps cycle in record time, and I remembered the inscription I’d noticed on Derek’s jacket.
The piece was accompanied by a photograph of a smiling and triumphant Derek and included a short interview.
I was an odd kid. The runt, even though there were only two of us. I was frightened of everything. But after my accident I made the decision never to fear anything again …
There it was again – “the runt”. Amanda disliked Derek and didn’t trust him. But Bob did. He continued to trust his brother, despite everything, despite Derek’s reporting of his charity to the Regulator. Mary had said Bob told Derek everything. Had he told him of his plans to leave?
Bob had allowed Derek to be the event coordinator for the cycle. McFadden said that Mary knew someone involved in the cycle, which was how she’d got the booking. I’d assumed that person was Bob, but if she was supposed to keep her relationship with Bob a secret, it couldn’t have been him. Was Derek the one who’d arranged the accommodation? To ensure all the players were staying in the one place? Had Derek set all of this up, just to kill his brother?
