She shrugged. “So, we had no comeback. My family couldn’t understand why, as a lawyer, I couldn’t do anything. I tried my best, but it tore my family apart. It was taking too long. My mother and father both died before anything was sorted.” She looked at her feet. “It was one of the reasons my marriage broke up. I got a bit obsessed with it.”

“Were you one of the people who lodged a complaint with the Regulator?” I asked.

“Yes. For all the good it did. Nothing happened quickly enough. It destroyed my brother.”

“Chris?”

If she was surprised that I knew his name, she didn’t show it. She just nodded. “He tried his best to get money together for our mother, desperate to raise some cash. Got himself into all kinds of dodgy stuff in the process.” She bit her lip. “Chris has changed beyond all recognition over this. All he cares about is money. Says he’ll never be destitute like our mother. His marriage broke up because of it too. Bob Jameson destroyed two marriages and our entire family.”

It occurred to me that if Chris had hit his wife, then he was responsible for destroying his own family, but I didn’t say it. There was something I wanted to ask her first.

“Marina, you dictated that will, you know what’s in it.” I paused. “Bob Jameson left a legacy to Sue, Chris’s sister-in-law. The will said she was his daughter.”

She met my gaze.

“I know Chris is here, in Inishowen. I’ve seen him. You can’t tell me that’s a coincidence.”

Then it hit me. Of course! This was why Marina had tried to keep herself hidden; why she’d left the pub so abruptly that first night, why her mood had changed as soon as she’d walked in and seen them all. It was nothing to do with Phyllis. She must have been trying to avoid the Jamesons and the Burns all weekend, although it didn’t seem to bother her brother. Was that what they’d been arguing about?

Her eyes welled and she looked down. “Chris just told me what happened with Lissa. I’m so ashamed of him. I never thought my own brother would do something like that.”

“What did he tell you?”

She took a deep breath. “The family were having tests for bone marrow donation in case Peadar needed it and it came out through that … that Bob Jameson was Sue’s father. I don’t know what the circumstances were, but it seems to be true. But when Lissa told Chris, he lashed out. The man he hated most in the world had suddenly become part of his family.”

So Lissa and Sue knew Bob was Sue’s father, I thought. Presumably that meant Jude did too.
