“No, it’s a good question, right?” I smile at him briefly, and then look at my victory cupcake, swipe my finger across the frosting. “I’ll figure it out,” I repeat. “Carly says we’ll figure it out.” I wipe the grainy frosting off on the stack of napkins in front of me. None of them respond, so I look up. Nevaeh is lifting an eyebrow, and it is such a skeptical eyebrow that I almost flinch. Her mouth is a jewel, as always, painted this afternoon a glowing emerald green and gold, the kind of colors my mentees have shown up trying to wear, but only Nevaeh can do those looks justice.
“I’m going to go get a coffee,” I say to her eyebrow. Taylor drops my hand, and Katherine and Nevaeh unwind their arms from around me, let me slide out of the booth. I go and stare up at the menu for a long while, even though I’ve memorized everything on the list, and then just order a black coffee, a flash of my mother’s voice—the calories you save, if you just skip the cream! And the sugar!
None of them look up when I slide back into the booth. They’ve got their heads bent over a spiral notebook. Katherine snatches the pen away from Taylor. “Taylor,” she says sternly. “Serious suggestions.”
“There’s nothing frivolous about international bank robbery,” Taylor says.
“It’s just brainstorming,” Nevaeh says to me, and flashes a smile. “So you can scuba dive for treasure, right? You’re from Florida.”
They’ve already got a list scribbled halfway down the page: Find spare change on street. Steal from the rich. Invent viral app. Stock exchange. Kitten farm. There’s a heart drawn around Kitten farm in another pen color. Sell blood. Sell kidney. Sell sibling’s kidney.
“I don’t have any siblings,” I say, tapping that one.
“I was suggesting mine,” Katherine says. She has two sisters, one at Harvard, the other at Berkeley. “That is a lot of kidneys between us all.”
“This is my problem, everyone,” I say.
When no one says anything, I look up.
“She can sell their kidneys if she wants,” Taylor says.
“We have a list already, Addie,” Nevaeh says. “Don’t be difficult.”
And then I shake myself.
I’m in the program. I made it. That means something. Which Carly was trying to say, my guilty voice whispers. It means something to her and to these three, and I can worry about the money in private.
“Don’t sell any kidneys,” I say to Katherine. “That is illegal.”
Taylor scratches out Sell kidneys. Nevaeh takes a photo of me crossing my eyes at her. “Can I?” she asks, showing it to me, and I nod. She posts it and then looks up after a moment, grinning, and shows the screen to Taylor. He whistles.
“Did you see your video? Did you see my post?” Nevaeh says.
