“No, I will die if I eat something,” I say, squinting into the sun, and then I hear my name.
Ellory, rushing out of the building, a bit out of breath, looking at all of us, holding out her phone.
“Can I post this?” she asks. “I recorded it. It was—it was pretty perfect.” She pauses, then adds, “I hate our costumes this year. I hated them last year too.”
“Send it to me?” Nevaeh calls to Ellory, then asks me, “Can I post it?” They’re both looking at me. Katherine and Jack are staring at me too.
“Yes,” I say. “Everyone can post it everywhere. Let’s print out stills and post them all over school too,” I joke.
“For real?” Jack asks, looking a little exhausted at the thought.
“No,” I say, nudging him. “Not for real.”
“I knew those were your photos,” Ellory says to him. “They were awesome.”
“How long will it take for the honor board to make its decision?” I ask her.
She shakes her head, looking at her phone. “We’re meeting to talk after classes tonight.”
“Well, this is going to be the longest day in the history of space and time,” Taylor says. And then he stiffens.
I turn to see Christopher jogging up the steps. Nevaeh right behind him, looking grim. He stops at the one below me and leans down into my face. I lean away, take Katherine’s hand, and stand up.
“You want to sign this for me before you get kicked out?” Christopher says, thrusting one of Jack’s photos in front of my face. The length of my thigh, the word WHORE.
I snatch it from him and he laughs.
“Only if we get a signed pic of your dick,” Taylor says.
“Did you save them?” Christopher says. “Or did you need me to send more?”
“Oh, so that really was you in those shots?” Ellory says. She’s holding up her phone.
“Are you filming me?” Christopher says.
“Did you just admit you harassed us?” Nevaeh says.
“I got him admitting to it,” Ellory says.
“Did you turn us in?” Katherine says. “I think it was you.”
“‘Sorry not sorry,’” I say to him. “That was classy.”
“Dude,” Jack says. “Not cool.”
Christopher ignores him. “You’d love to know,” he says to me, a little red now.
“Actually, we don’t really care about that,” I say. “But I do love that we have receipts. I wonder if admitting you sent dick pics is an immoral-conduct thing.”
“Back off,” Katherine says when he takes a step toward me, and he laughs and shakes his head, rolls his shoulders like he’s throwing off his anger.
“Fuck-all is going to happen,” he says, and then adds, “Be sure to say goodbye before you’re kicked off campus, Addie.” With that, he saunters down the steps.
“That dickhead,” Jack mutters under his breath, and I squelch a laugh.
