- About the Author
After running her through the reactor room, Fitch showed her the manufacturing facility which had recently been added. “You'll be given every conceivable piece of equipment, but things will be needed later that weren't considered, and obviously, parts will fail. Your team should be able to fabricate almost anything you need in here.”
“It seems like you've considered everything,” RJ commented with a smile.
“We've tried to, but I suspect you'll be awake less than a week before you think of the first thing we've overlooked.”
They took the elevator up to the central tunnel and walked down the corridor that led to Main Sleep Chamber One. They stepped through the large open door and RJ noticed that not only was the room much larger than she'd expected, but the walls had all been created from stainless steel. There were several workers, on scissor lifts, working on plumbing and ductwork at the ceiling. To one side she saw a set of stairs leading to a second level.
Cowan and Travers were standing in the middle of the room studying a set of blueprints. When the General approached, Cowan looked up, “Morning Matt.”
“James, Amy, I want you to meet RJ Anderson.”
Cowan nodded and smiled. Amy offered a friendly wave.
“As soon as we have this facility completely operational, RJ will assume command,” Fitch explained.
“Has anyone explained the sleep process to you yet?” Cowan asked.
“Over the past week, I've spent quite a bit of time reading all the reports that have been filed. I have a basic idea about how it all works.”
“Good. Let me show you around then,” Cowan offered.
The two of them walked off, leaving Travers and General Fitch to go over some changes to the set of blueprints Travers and Cowan had been studying.
“There will be row after row of special beds in this room, twenty-five hundred here and the same number upstairs. There's an identical room across on the other side of the central tunnel but currently, it's about two weeks behind in construction. There are two more chambers below here, on the main floor. They're much smaller and designed to hold the team who will wake up first. Those men on the ladders above us are finishing up the piping which will supply breathing gas, SF016, and the wake-up medications. The tanks containing the SF016 are up in the highest point of the mountain. Gravity draws it down as needed, and there's a computer that monitors for leaks. The system will immediately awaken the on-call technician if a leak develops. We haven't been able to agree on exactly how much SF016 will be needed for ten thousand plus sleepers for a period of twenty years, because everyone metabolizes it at a slightly different rate. Consequently, we've taken our best guess and tripled it. All the other systems in here will give out long before you run out of SF016.
