DAY 825
Doctor Anderson was visiting Harvard University as a guest lecturer, speaking about disaster management in third world countries to a group of about two hundred graduate students. As the lecture ended, there was the traditional opportunity to ask questions. RJ was hoping there would be few, if any questions; there was a three PM flight back to New York, and if things went well, RJ intended to be on that flight.
The students left the old lecture hall a few minutes later, and RJ quickly started packing up notes and books. Glancing up, RJ noticed two men approaching from the back of the hall. Perhaps there’d be some questions after all, but with a second look, it became apparent that these men weren't students. Both stood too tall and self-assured, and they wore expensive suits.
“Can I help you with something?” RJ asked.
“Doctor Anderson, I'm Agent Adams, and this is Agent Shea; we're with the FBI.” Both men flashed their identification. “We've been instructed to escort you to a critical meeting taking place in Washington DC.”
RJ frowned, placing a few sheets of paper into the briefcase. “What's the nature of the meeting?”
“I'm sorry Doctor, but we haven't been informed. We were just told to get you there, ASAP. There's a plane waiting for you at Logan Airport.”
“I'm sorry, but I can't just drop everything. My schedule is too busy to just run off without more information.”
Agent Shea smiled. “I understand.” From the inside of his jacket, he withdrew a plain white envelope and handed it to RJ.
RJ studied the envelope for just a moment before tearing it open and read the contents three times before shoving the letter back in the envelope. “Okay. Take me to Washington.”
On the drive to the airport, RJ considered the sudden change in events and took out the letter again. After looking at the Presidential seal at the top, then President Daniel Anson's signature at the bottom, RJ glanced back at the salutation.
The first thing the President needed to understand was that absolutely no one – not even the President of the United States – got to call her Rebecca.
Rebecca Anderson grew up in a small middle-class town, with two loving parents. Rebecca had been named after her grandmother on her mother's side. When Rebecca was fourteen, her father was killed in an automobile accident. An accident which also left her mother mentally impaired and unable to care for her teenage daughter.
