  51. About the Author

Yesterday, after much debate Congress, with a two-thirds majority approved funding for President Anson's plan to implement disaster shelters around the country. With the ever-increasing threat of chemical, biological or nuclear terrorism aimed at the US, the president received approval to begin construction of shelters which will provide a safe environment for people in the event of such an attack. Sources report that the president lobbied harder for these shelters than he has for any other spending requests he'd made. Critics call this plan wasteful and compare it to the never used nuclear bomb shelters that sprang up at the height of the Cold War.

RJ put the paper down, shaking her head, and wondered if she really wanted to get involved with these people.

Upon landing, the plane was met by Agent Kathy Muller, who escorted her to the waiting car. “I assume you can't tell me what this is about either?” RJ asked.

“Sorry Doctor Anderson, I was just asked to meet you here and make sure you got to the White House ASAP.”

Arriving at the White House, RJ stepped out of the car and was met by a smartly-dressed woman, wearing a gray skirt and a white shirt. She didn't identify herself but led RJ in through the main doors and up a flight of stairs, indicating a conference room on the left, where two men stood.

“Here you are, Doctor Anderson,” the woman said.

RJ stepped inside, surveying the two men. The first was a tall white male, wearing an Army uniform. She could see from his shoulder that he was a four-star General, and when he turned to look at her; she recognized him as General Draper. Eight years before, when she'd still been serving in the Army, he'd been her divisional commander. While she'd never met him personally, she certainly knew of him and his reputation.

The other man was a bit older; an African American male of medium height. She'd seen him before and knew he was National Security Advisor Jeremiah Baker.

Mr. Baker looked at her and held out his hand, “Welcome. I'm Jeremiah Baker, National Security Advisor and this is General Lee Draper, Dr. Anderson. Or do you prefer RJ?”

She took his offered hand. “RJ is just fine, sir.” She turned to look at Draper. “General Draper, I've heard much about you.”

“Likewise. We have some matters we need to discuss with you. Would you like to take a seat?”

RJ sat down on one of the padded chairs at the conference table. “I was under the impression I was meeting with the President.”

“Depending on how things go here, you probably will be,” explained Baker, who sat down in a seat opposite her.
