- About the Author
“Good. We have a lot to do, and in all honesty, I don't even know where to start.” Fitch pointed towards the console they'd noticed before. “This is the central control area; from here we've got access to over a dozen communication satellites. We can communicate with any military or civilian group we need to contact. There are some new satellites, which are going to be launched in case of a disaster. When the sleepers awaken, they'll be able to use them for communication with the shelters, and monitoring what's happening all around the planet. There are seventy-five external and just as many internal cameras. The external cameras are spaced out so we can see every inch of ground up to five miles out from the facility. There are also terminal imaging and sound detection systems all around the perimeter. All of that's monitored from here.”
“We can also open and close the main doors at the tunnel entrance. Originally, the idea was to make it so we could collapse the main tunnel from here with remote explosives. Now though, I think we'll scrap that idea. We can assume control over all the automatic functions from here, including elevators, fire suppression, and water flow. If necessary, we'll even be able to manage the main power and computer systems from right here. I plan to make it so we can monitor and manage the sleep capsules from here too. If you've got any suggestions, I'd welcome them.”
Cowan nodded, his eyes scanning the system. “Sounds good. I'm sure we'll come up with some ideas as we get a better feel for the place.”
Travers nodded her agreement.
The trio left the control room and started down the corridor. The first door on the left revealed the Health Center. The doors parted without any security checks, and they entered into a hall. On the left was a large open area, measuring about one hundred square feet. “This was intended to be a small fitness center. Ideally, I'd love to keep it and even expand it but I'm waiting to hear whether that will be possible. The medical facilities were designed to hold a small clinic, but obviously, we need to expand those plans to a fully-featured hospital, and medical labs. We'll also have to have the ability to synthesize required drugs and medications. I've spoken to the engineers, and they're working on plans to make this area twenty-five times larger than it is now.”
They came across an Air Force Captain who was briefing an Army Major in a small office off to one side. Fitch drew Cowan and Travers across to the doorway and knocked against the wall. “Excuse me, gentlemen.”
The two officers got to their feet swiftly when they realized it was General Fitch standing at the door.
