  51. About the Author

The two men continued working their way through the house and came across a bedroom. It was dark in the room, but Davis could still make out the scene before him. There were two people in the bed, and he suspected the one on the right was female, judging by the remains of her nightshirt. There was nothing left of either body, other than clothing, bones, and some hair. The one on the right was shirtless, and his right arm was bent upwards, resting on the pillow next to his head. Still clutched in the remains of his hand was a small caliber handgun. There was a hole in the side of the skull, just above the right ear.

Daniels gently peeled back the covers from the woman's body and pointed out how stained the sheets were from the fluids which had no doubt leaked from the body as it decomposed. He carefully examined the head and then the torso, but there weren't any signs of bullet wounds or any other kind trauma.

For the next two hours, Davis and his team investigated buildings in the small town, visiting perhaps fifteen more home and twice as many businesses. In almost every building they encountered skeletons, but no living people. It appeared there hadn't been anyone around for many, many years.

Sergeant Davis was getting ready to head back to their rendezvous point at the town square when he decided to check out one last building. His team entered the Baptist Church which was situated on the south side of the town.

Entering the wooden structure, Davis was stunned by what they discovered. Across the top of every pew was sheets of plywood, laid out as makeshift beds. There was a skeleton on every single board. A count by Daniels confirmed there were at least a hundred skeletons in the old church. At first, the sight seemed incomprehensible, but quickly the picture came into focus. When the local hospital had gotten overloaded, many of the townsfolk had brought the sick and dying here, either because this was the only other organized group trying to help them, or because they knew that divine intervention was the only possible hope in what was a hopeless situation.

His men were staring in shocked silence at the spectacle before them when there was a sudden clatter from the back of the sanctuary. They all looked up in time to see a brief movement. Not sure what was going on, several of his team members raced forward while the rest ran outside to cut off any escape route.
