- About the Author
Two weeks after the sleep began, Matt Fitch had posted a status report. RJ viewed the information and was shocked when she saw the General's face. His hair was thinning, and he looked fatigued. “Hello RJ, Amy, Brad. I must assume that you've successfully completed your sleep if you're hearing this message. The death toll is rising rapidly. The hospitals are virtually useless to the sick. The transportation system has collapsed. There's a lot of anger building up in the media that more wasn't done to help prevent this and provide more shelters. Before the media stops broadcasting, the President is going to announce that there is a group trained for the purpose of rebuilding and that they're housed in a special facility and will begin their work as soon as the radiation reaches normal levels. He won't disclose your location or any other pertinent details. There is a problem. Our experts have reviewed the data and have determined that there's much more radioactive debris in the atmosphere than we'd anticipated; in fact, there's five times as much as our worst-case scenarios had predicted. The radiation levels are much higher than we'd expected, and conditions won't be safe for your awakening for possibly as many as thirty five to fifty years instead of the anticipated twenty. I linked to your computers and determined that technically, this shouldn't be a problem for you. It's just much longer than we'd calculated, and your equipment isn't designed for use for that period. The reserve supply of SF016 should be enough though, to allow you to make it all the way through. I'll update you as I get more information. Good luck.”
The second message was dated one month later. General Draper's face appeared on the screen and RJ was shocked by what she saw. His hair was almost gone, and his face had a sickly gray pallor. “Hello RJ, I just wanted to give an update. I believe Matt explained that the President would be letting the country know you'd be around after the radiation levels stabilized to help in the rebuilding process. That message was sent out about two weeks ago. Since then, almost everything has ground to a halt. The last of the TV broadcasts went off the air a week ago. There's still some stuff circulating on shortwave radio but nothing official.”
