  36. SNEAK PEEK: A STONE’S THROW AWAY

I was so lucky to finally get a chance to live my dream and visit Scotland, and it was an experience I will always treasure. As with many people, I have a family link that leads back to Scotland. I’m lucky enough to have Scottish ancestry on both my mother’s and father’s side of the family, but for me, the stories of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, where my father’s side descend from the MacLeods of Dunvegan, has the strongest pull.

We were brought up on stories of raids and castles, feuds and fairies and they’ve always stayed with me, much like Gran’s family stories she told to Elle. So, I went on my own little quest in search of our family legacy and found Dunvegan Castle, which I’m happy to say was in much better shape than poor old Stormeil Castle.

While Australia is where I was born and bred and I have at least five generations’ worth of family, visiting Scotland made me realise just how deeply a place can come to be buried within a person, because part of my heart will always belong to that beautiful, wild country that my ancestors came from.

Many of the places featured in the book are where my husband and I spent time on our trip to Scotland and can be visited or stayed at. Feel free to add them to your own Scotland bucket list.

Please note that although I researched and asked advice on certain aspects of sheep farming in Scotland and other general bits and pieces, all mistakes are my own, or were changed to suit the plot!

A Stone’s Throw Away

KARLY LANE

When a drought dries up the contents of a water hole on her uncle’s property, investigative journalist Phillipa Davenport is astonished at what she finds.

On a deadline and with a severe case of writers’ block, Pip doesn’t have time to investigate this story—she just wants to write her book. However, the universe and her neighbour seem to have other ideas. And then there’s the mysterious detective assigned to the case, who Pip is beginning to find very distracting.

When the only person of interest is a ninety-eight-year-old war veteran, who is unable to communicate and who appears to have been found unjustly guilty in the court of public opinion, Pip feels drawn to the case despite the fact she simply doesn’t have time to take it on. But how often does an old cold case murder land on your doorstep?

With more questions arising as each layer of the past is peeled back, Pip soon realises she’s opened a can of worms, and secrets thought long-buried suddenly emerge bringing some hard truths for the little town to face.
