‘I know that. They’ve been in here a hundred times to check on me.’ Libby looked at him with affection and gratitude. ‘I don’t know what to say, Alex…’
‘Say that from now on you’ll carry two adrenaline injections,’ Alex drawled, back to his cool self now that his sister was out of danger. ‘One wasn’t enough.’
Libby closed her eyes at the memory. ‘I was so scared—I keep remembering—’
‘Don’t—it was the worse moment of my life.’ Alex’s voice was suddenly gruff and he leaned forward to hug his sister just as Andreas walked into the room with the children.
There was an emotional reunion and the children totally ignored hospital protocol and crawled all over the bed to get to their mother.
Andreas took his brother-in-law to one side. ‘I met Jenny.’
Alex smiled. ‘Great, isn’t she? Doubtless she was cooking.’
Andreas didn’t return the smile. ‘Have you spoken to her today?’
Alex frowned slightly, his eyes on his sister. ‘Yes—briefly this morning. Why?’
‘She looked very upset about something when I arrived,’ Andreas said quietly. ‘She wouldn’t tell me what.’
Alex turned, suddenly giving him his full attention. ‘Upset?’
‘It was probably nothing.’ Andreas shrugged dismissively. ‘The children had made a terrible mess—it was probably that.’
‘Jenny doesn’t care about mess,’ Alex said tersely. ‘And small children don’t faze her in the least. In fact, I haven’t really seen anything much faze her.’
Suddenly he felt an intense feeling of foreboding.
‘You’re sure something was wrong?’
‘Well, I don’t know her, of course, but, yes…’ Andreas lifted a broad shoulder ‘…I’d say something was very wrong. She looked…stricken.’
Stricken?
After what they’d shared the night before he hadn’t expected Jenny to look anything but happy.
But what did you really give her last night? a tiny voice nagged him as he struggled to make sense of his feelings. He wasn’t the type of man who said ‘I love you’, even in the middle of the hottest sex, and he was well aware that he hadn’t said it to Jenny. But she hadn’t minded that. Had she?
In fact, she’d even told him that she didn’t expect commitment.
Which just about made her his perfect woman.
So why was he panicking about losing her?
He’d never worried about losing a woman before. Ever.
Shaken out of his customary cool by emotions he didn’t understand, Alex looked at his sister. ‘I need to go home. I need to check on Jenny. I’ll see you later.’
Libby shifted Athena out of the way so she could concentrate on her brother. ‘She loves you, Alex. Really, really loves you.’
Alex tensed, his conscience pricking him for the first time in his life.
Damn. He never ever should have made love to her.
But it had been so perfect…
Suddenly he felt as though he was being suffocated and he left the hospital at a run.
He just had a bad feeling.
He drove at a pace that would have horrified Jenny and the minute he pulled up outside his house he knew that Andreas was right. Something was very wrong.
