Alex was the ultimate catch. He had a mind like a rapier, he was sinfully good-looking and he could kiss a woman until she forgot her own name. He was good company and a surprisingly good listener. He was kind to his patients and a dedicated doctor. And he’d be a great father once he woke up to the fact that Daisy was his.
Not realising that she hadn’t once thought about his money, Jenny tidied the kitchen with her free arm and then froze as she heard female laughter.
She felt as though she’d been showered with cold water.
Here she was, happily playing house and make believe, and she hadn’t given any thought to Alex’s current girlfriend. And there was bound to be one, of course. He just wasn’t the sort of man to deny himself.
She dropped the cloth and held Daisy tighter, bracing herself as the door opened and Alex strolled in, his arm looped casually around the shoulders of a stunning blonde woman who was wearing the shortest skirt Jenny had ever seen.
Jenny tried to smile and she hoped that it looked more convincing than it felt.
‘Hi, there—I’m Jenny.’
‘And I’m Libby.’ The girl looked at her curiously, switched her gaze to Daisy and then glanced at Alex.
‘There’s obviously quite a lot that you haven’t been telling me, you naughty boy.’ Her voice was a seductive purr and her amazing blue eyes teased wickedly. ‘I should drop in on you unannounced more often.’
‘Not if you want to survive to old age,’ Alex drawled, suppressing a yawn. ‘Jenny, this is my sister Libby. Don’t answer any of her questions. She’s worse than any journalist.’
Sister?
Jenny wasn’t sure which was worse. The pain of thinking that he was involved with this beautiful creature, or the intense feeling of joy that swamped her when she realised that he wasn’t. If she’d needed conformation about the strength of her feelings for him, she had it now.
Alex poured a coffee and handed it to his sister. ‘So, to what do I owe the honour? Have they run out of shoes in London?’
Libby laughed and sipped the coffee. ‘No. I just happened to be passing.’
Alex lifted an eyebrow. ‘Passing where? This is a dead end, Lib.’
Libby shrugged. ‘All right. Actually, Andreas is away in Greece with Adrienne for a few days and I thought I’d take the opportunity to visit you.’ She turned to smile at Jenny. ‘Adrienne is Andreas’s niece. She’s seventeen.’
Alex looked at his sister suspiciously. ‘And that’s it?’
Her eyes twinkled naughtily. ‘Well, Katy and I haven’t heard a squeak from you lately and that’s always a sign that you’re otherwise occupied.’
Alex raised his eyes to heaven. ‘And knowing that, you didn’t think that I might want to be left in peace?’
‘Absolutely not.’ Libby smiled at Daisy. ‘We’re only staying for one night. I promise we won’t be in the way. We’ll just lounge on the beach.’
