Or did she?
She certainly never had before but she was painfully aware that if Alex hadn’t exerted his awesome willpower to break off the physical contact she would have gone wherever he’d chosen to take her.
* * *
Jenny sat at the table in the kitchen, feeding Daisy, dreading Alex’s arrival.
She’d thrown herself at her sister’s lover and he’d had to tactfully reject her.
She ought to be grateful to him for saving them both from a huge mistake but at the moment she couldn’t see past the humiliation of having thrown herself at a man who didn’t want her.
Where on earth did they go from here?
But when Alex strode into the kitchen five minutes later he didn’t show even a flicker of embarrassment.
But, then, he must be used to women flinging themselves at him, she reflected miserably, concentrating her attention on Daisy as he poured himself coffee and pulled out a chair.
He sat down, stretched his long legs out in front of him and reached for a freshly baked roll.
She was making a determined effort not to look at him but she knew he was looking at her.
‘Good morning.’ His voice was soft and very male and connected with every female part of her.
How did he do that? she wondered helplessly, trying to stop her hand shaking as she lifted the spoon to Daisy’s mouth. He was sitting on the other side of the table but already her heart was thumping and her pulse was racing. The moment Alex entered a room it seemed to throb with sexual tension.
‘Good morning.’ She answered without looking at him and there was a brief silence.
‘You’re going to have to look at me some time, Red Riding Hood,’ he murmured finally, a touch of amusement in his velvety tones. ‘It was just a kiss, sweetheart. There’s no need to be shy.’
Just?
The man obviously had no idea just how well he kissed.
But the fact that he could dismiss it so easily just confirmed her belief that it had meant absolutely nothing to him. She already knew that, of course. He’d been the one who’d ended it. And she’d virtually begged him not to…
Embarrassment swamped her again and she wished he’d go to work and leave her alone.
But he obviously wasn’t going anywhere.
Instead, he poured himself some more coffee and her eyes slid to his hands, fixing on the dark hairs just visible below the cuffs of his shirt. Everything about Alex was sexy. Even his hands. The same hands that had touched her so skilfully the night before.
She dragged her attention back to Daisy. This was ridiculous. Since when had she started noticing a man’s hands?
He gave an impatient sigh. ‘Listen, Jenny, I don’t—’
‘Please, don’t say anything else.’ She stood up so quickly she almost knocked the chair flying, but she just couldn’t bear to hear him list the reasons why he didn’t want to be with her. ‘I’d rather not talk about it.’
