He closed his eyes briefly and gave a wry smile.
He was rapidly adjusting to having a woman in the house. There was something amazingly restful about coming home to Jenny’s cooking.
She walked out of the kitchen, her green eyes anxious, and he realised with profound shock that it wasn’t coming home to her cooking that was restful, it was coming home to Jenny.
It was the patient syndrome, he told himself firmly. He was fixated on his nurse.
Goodness only knew what a psychiatrist would make of that.
‘You look awful.’ She frowned at him in concern. ‘You never should have stayed so long.’ She touched his arm gently in a gesture of sympathy and he felt his body harden in response to her touch.
Suddenly all he wanted was to drag her off to bed and rediscover those incredibly long legs.
Damn.
This was getting really bad.
The sooner his lawyer called the better for both of them.
‘Where’s Daisy?’
‘Fast asleep.’
So even the baby wasn’t going to provide a distraction. Gritting his teeth, he disengaged himself from her and paced across the room to pour himself a drink.
He paused with his hand on the bottle and then glanced over his shoulder towards her with a sigh.
‘Go on. Say it. I shouldn’t be drinking.’
‘You’ve had a lousy day, Alex,’ she said quietly, her green eyes warm with sympathy. ‘You’re entitled to a drink if you want it.’
Suddenly he found that he didn’t want it.
He could think of a much better way to relax.
But what he really wanted was totally off limits.
Jenny was staring at him in consternation and it occurred to him that if she could read his mind she’d run a mile.
In fact, she ought to be running a mile. He wasn’t sure that he was safe around her any more.
He sucked in a breath and ran a hand over the back of his neck to relieve the tension. It was taking all his willpower not to drag her into his arms and it was getting to the stage where he didn’t trust himself around her. Normally if he met a woman that he liked and she played by his rules then he was perfectly happy to pursue the relationship to its natural conclusion. Which was nearly always bed.
But Jenny was different.
Jenny didn’t do bed.
Not in the casual sense, anyway.
She was looking at him with concern. ‘Can I do anything? Would you like me to run you a bath or something?’
Despite the building tension, his eyes gleamed. ‘Ah—we’re back to the bath again.’ Maybe if he teased her it would help. ‘Jenny’s answer to all of life’s problems.’
He waited for her to blush, the way she always did when he teased her, but this time she smiled, her cheeks dimpling slightly.
‘You should try it,’ she suggested mildly. ‘It works.’
‘Only if you show me how.’
He was trying to shock her into backing off. Trying to warn her to run for cover while she still had the chance.
