Jenny shook her head. ‘Nothing wrong with the baby,’ she said, and quickly explained what had happened.

Tina’s eyes widened. ‘You spotted that?’

Jenny blushed. ‘Well, I was just—’

‘Quick off the mark,’ a very male voice interjected from behind them, and Jenny turned to find Alex lounging in the doorway.

Her pulse rate doubled. ‘How is she?’

‘She has a pulmonary embolus and the medical team is looking at her now.’

‘Oh, so it was something—’ She broke off and he gave a wry smile.

‘It was rather more than something, Nurse Phillips. If you hadn’t noticed her symptoms, she might well have died.’

Unaccountably warmed by his praise, Jenny cuddled the baby closer. ‘Well, I’m glad she’s all right.’

Alex pulled a face. ‘She’s worrying herself silly about the children. Did you get hold of the husband?’

Jenny nodded. ‘He’s coming straight away. He was very worried.’

‘Was he, indeed?’ Alex laughed. ‘Then you obviously did a good job.’ He looked at the baby who was snuggled contentedly against her shoulder. ‘Perhaps you’d better take the kids back into her. The medical reg is just seeing her now. He’s going to admit her for anticoagulation and observation.’

‘Right, well, her husband said he’d be here in the next fifteen minutes so at least he’ll be able to take the children.’

Jenny walked with Alex back to Resus and found the medical reg making arrangements to transfer Helen to the ward.

Fortunately her husband arrived quickly and was able to help with the children.

Alex let out a long breath as the doors of Resus swung closed behind them. ‘Maybe now we can snatch a quick cup of coffee.’

Jenny glanced at her watch and realised that they’d missed both coffee and lunch but before she could comment the doors swung open again and Tina hurried in, followed by a team of paramedics pushing a trolley.

Alex’s gaze flickered to Jenny. ‘Obviously no coffee,’ he drawled, and she gave a smile of mutual understanding as she hurried to help with the man on the trolley.

It was obviously going to be one of those days.

CHAPTER FIVE

JENNY was just returning the casserole to the oven when she heard Alex’s key in the door.

Her heart rate increased and she took a deep breath, bracing herself for more confrontation.

She’d hesitated before making dinner but in the end she’d decided to go ahead.

Doubtless he’d make some caustic comment about the fact that she was behaving like a wife, but she hadn’t eaten all day and she knew that he hadn’t either. It seemed ridiculous not to eat dinner together.

She looked up to see him standing in the doorway to the kitchen.

‘Hi.’ She knew she sounded nervous and hated herself for it. ‘I cooked dinner because I thought you might be hungry but I’m not trying to be wifely and if you’d rather not then—’

‘I’m starving.’

‘Oh.’ She relaxed slightly and gave him a hesitant smile. ‘Well, that’s good. It will be about half an hour. I’ve already bathed Daisy and put her to bed.’
