Who or what had made him that way?

As far as she was aware, his family was stable enough. His father was one of the richest men in the country and she knew that he’d inherited enormous wealth himself. He certainly didn’t have money worries.

In fact, judging from the careless way he lounged on the sofa, eyes closed as he listened to the music, one arm flung across his forehead, he didn’t seem to have any worries at all.

Jenny stared at him in helpless frustration.

He was obviously determined to ignore the fact that Daisy was his child.

How on earth was she ever going to encourage him to build a relationship with her?

CHAPTER FOUR

IT WAS the cry that woke him.

Dragged from a deep sleep by the terrified wails, Alex jerked upright in bed and waited for the cries to stop.

They didn’t.

He muttered a curse and sprang out of bed, padding barefoot along the landing towards the room he’d had decorated as a nursery.

The baby was sobbing in her cot and Alex frowned, glancing behind him, expecting to see Jenny hurrying to take over.

But there was no sign of Jenny.

Cursing softly under his breath, he stepped into the room and scooped the baby out of the cot, feeling the dampness soaking through her cotton sleepsuit.

He rolled his eyes. ‘No wonder you’re yelling,’ he muttered softly, tucking the baby against his shoulder. ‘You need changing. You need your mummy.’ He broke off as he said the words, remembering that she no longer had a mother.

But she had Jenny.

Where the hell was Jenny?

He glanced impatiently towards the door again but the landing was still in darkness and there was no sign of movement from the other bedroom.

The baby had stopped crying and was snuffling softly against his neck but he knew that the moment he put her down she’d start crying again, and no wonder. She was soaking wet.

Muttering under his breath, he glanced around the room. Nappies were neatly stacked next to a changing mat, along with wipes and everything else he was likely to need.

There was no reason why he couldn’t change her himself.

Except that it just wasn’t the sort of thing he did.

Even with his sisters’ children, he avoided the nappies.

He glanced impatiently towards the door again but there was still no sign of Jenny.

For a moment he was tempted to wake her, and then the baby smiled up at him again and for the first time in his life Alex Westerling found himself utterly captivated by a female.

Her soft, baby smile warmed something deep inside him, reaching a part of himself that he hadn’t known existed.

Staring down into her gorgeous blue eyes, Alex decided that maybe they didn’t need Jenny’s help after all.

He dealt with life-threatening situations on a daily basis.

He could deal with one wet nappy.

‘OK, young lady, I suppose we’ll have to do this ourselves, but you’re going to have to be patient. This whole nappy business is new to me. Whenever my sisters visit with their offspring, I always avoid this bit.’ He laid her gently on the mat on the floor and undid her sleepsuit. ‘Ugh. This is totally disgusting. No wonder you were screaming.’
