It was a lie, of course. How could any woman not find him attractive? He was impossibly handsome and his total indifference to his startling good looks only intensified his appeal.
But she wasn’t interested in a man with no morals, no matter how good-looking he was.
And Alex Westerling had absolutely no morals.
There was a brief silence and then he threw back his head and laughed. ‘Ouch. Well, that’s put me in my place. All right, stay if you dare. Frankly I’m too tired to argue with you. But what are you going to do when I prove that she isn’t my child?’
Seeing the masculine challenge in his eyes Jenny’s heart beat slightly faster but she lifted her chin, determined not to show him how uncomfortable he made her feel. ‘That isn’t going to happen, Dr Westerling.’
‘That is exactly what is going to happen, Miss Phillips,’ Alex returned smoothly, mimicking her formality, ‘but if you really want to risk living with me, that’s up to you. I’m going to bed and frankly I don’t give a damn where you sleep as long as you and that baby don’t wake me up.’
And with that he drained his glass, thumped it down on the table and strode away from her.
CHAPTER THREE
ALEX awoke to the smell of freshly baked rolls and strong coffee.
Remembering the events of the night before, he gave a groan of disbelief and covered his eyes with a forearm, trying to block out reality.
People had always warned him that his sins would come back to haunt him and it turned out that they were right.
At this moment there was a bundle of trouble waiting for him downstairs in his kitchen.
A baby who he was fairly sure wasn’t his, complete with doting aunt who obviously thought he was a wicked seducer of innocent females.
He glanced at the clock and realised that it was almost seven o’clock. Which meant that he was expected at work in an hour.
Promising himself a really long lie-in at the weekend, he forced himself out of bed and into the shower before making the phone call that needed to be made.
By the time he appeared downstairs he was feeling better. His lawyer had been suitably reassuring and he was confident that the situation would be resolved quickly.
All in all he was feeling back in control and he was totally unprepared for the scene of domesticity in his usually pristine, undisturbed designer kitchen.
In the five years he’d lived in the house, he’d never invited a woman back to his home. This was his territory.
A totally bachelor environment.
But not any more.
Soft rolls, baked to a light brown, lay neatly on a rack, cooling, and a pot of steaming coffee sat in the middle of the table.
The baby was strapped in the high chair, happily gnawing on a piece of roll while Jenny chatted to her and spooned cereal into her mouth. She broke off and blushed when she saw Alex.
