  30. About C.S. Poe

Larkin still stood at the counter. “I meant to call you yesterday,” he said as Noah walked toward him. “I got caught up.”

“I saw the news.” Noah thrust the white envelope out. “This was in our—my—mailbox when I got home from work. I opened it… but it’s meant for you.”

Larkin uncrossed his arms and hesitantly took the offering. It was greeting-card size. No name, no mailing address, no stamps marking it as having traveled through the USPS. “What is it.”

“Just look at it,” Noah said.

Larkin held the envelope by one corner and carefully wriggled free the folded cardstock from within. He opened it to reveal cut-out magazine letters, pasted together to form new words:

SHAME ON YOU, LARKIN

The s had clearly been cut from an advertisement for the New York City subway—its font highly recognizable.

TO IGNORE MY MEMENTO

The death portrait of the unknown girl? Or the message scrawled on the back?

“WHAT THEY ARE, SO SHALL WE BE”

In the crease of the letter was a ticket stub, like those for Broadway theatres in the 1980s.
