  64. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The Fray put off an eerie green aurora from somewhere below. Exhausted, Naecia pressed her mind back up the cord, toward the reflections of the twins, but her momentum stalled. She willed herself back to the present, like being underwater and kicking for the surface not knowing if you have enough air to make it. The Fray pulled on her consciousness like a magnet, beckoning her to rest, to become one with it forever. She ignored the sensation, walling off her thoughts and thinking only about waking up in the dredge. A pinprick of light in the distance steadily dilated. She tried to hold her mind together as the mouth of the tunnel widened. The blackness dissolved away and so did the light. And at the end, there was Aptat. Aptat?

The lid opened and the dredge spun down. “Did you survive?” asked the stringhunter cheerfully.

Naecia wanted to tell them what she’d seen but the room was spinning. Teeth chattered. Icy tremors danced down her spine. She blinked her eyes and rubbed her face, opened her mouth.

“Slow down,” said Aptat. “Just relax.”

Naecia grunted, trying to warm her throat. Then, after cycling her breath to slow everything down, she rasped, “They weren’t trying to break physics. They were trying to go around it.”
