She was glad of the silence, glad of the opportunity to drift past the exhibits alone, her dad trailing some distance behind her. Eva had not wanted to come to France on this holiday. A group of her friends were going to Greece for a week, but when she had raised the suggestion her mother had pleaded with her. ‘This might be the last opportunity we have to go away as a family,’ she had said. Eva had to concede there was some truth to that. With her exams completed, she was excited about starting university, impatient for that part of her life to begin. She just needed to get through the summer first.
Earlier that morning, she’d FaceTimed Alicia who had looked blurry with sleep, her voice ragged from the night before. They talked a bit about the party, who’d been there, and Alicia had casually mentioned that she’d seen Callum.
‘That creep,’ Eva had said, and Alicia had made a face.
‘Come on. He’s not that bad.’
‘How can you say that?’ she’d asked, indignant. ‘After what I told you?’
‘Maybe you misread the situation, Eves. It sounds like he was just messing. You know what guys are like. He probably thought you’d be impressed or something.’
‘Oh yeah, cos that’s really impressive. Waving a gun at me after he’d drugged me and fucked me.’
‘It was half a tab. And we both know you wanted to fuck him too, so you can hardly plead lack of consent.’ Alicia’s voice softened then. ‘Listen, he feels pretty bad about the whole thing. You know he really likes you.’
‘You talked to him about it?’ A coolness crept into her voice. She was watching Alicia’s face carefully, the slide of her eyes as she looked away and then back again.
‘Yeah, a little. I mean, it was a party – I talked to lots of people.’
‘Where was Josh?’
Instantly, Alicia rolled her eyes. ‘Don’t mention his name to me. We are so done. Do you know, he applied to colleges in the UK and never fucking told me? And when I said I didn’t think I could do a long-distance relationship, he just laughed and said, “Suits me,” and walked off! Prick.’
Their conversation moved on to other gossip from the party and Eva let the moment pass. But it stayed: this new suspicion twitching around inside her.
