Where I came from, rules and laws were more of a suggestion. My family, or what was left it, lived by our own code, so a few signs stapled to some trees wasn’t exactly going to be something I held in high esteem.

I adjusted my bag. “Look, I don’t know who you are, but I didn’t ask for your…” I bit my lower lip, searching for the right word. “Help.”

Silence stretched and he gave me nothing, just that dark, deep glare. He clearly went to Warden, dressed in the navy uniform, with the tie hanging loose off his pale neck and the buttons undone at the top, but there was something different about him, something off. It was like looking at a famous oil painting with a few pieces missing.

And with every second that passed, an itch grew in my chest.

A twig snapped behind me and I jumped. In the silence it was deafening.

It past eight, the sun was nearly down, and around me the world blurred into darkness.

“Well, thanks…I guess.” I turned toward the trees.

He grabbed me. Again.

“What are you the fucking hall monitor?”

“You’re Zara Reyes, and if you so much as get a goddamn paper cut, I’m fucked. So maybe be a little more fucking careful.”

My heart skipped a beat at my name falling from this stranger’s mouth. I was so surprised that I let him dig his thumb deeper into my wrist. Focusing only on the veins and muscles climbing like vines up his pale, ghostly wrist.

“What?” It came out a whisper.

Not the strong, Zara Reyes my brother raised me to be.

He took a step to me, and also pulled me by the wrist. There was only a sliver of space between us, and I had to tilt my neck back to look at him. There was a sheen on his lips illuminated by the dwindling sun.

His eyes drifted above, to the darkening sky. Then suddenly, without so much as another word, he let me go and walked away.

“Wait!” I rubbed the bone at my wrist where his grip had bruised. “You know who I am. How?”

He turned around, that one eye cold. “You’re looking at your new babysitter, Zara.”
