“You’re defected Bullets. If Lir or any of the others got their hands on us, our fates would be the same. The only difference is that I’m out there doing something about it.”
“Were. You were out there,” Pine corrected her. “Now you’re here, doing nothing but bringing your troubles to our shores.”
Her teeth crashed together. Her temper was rising in a way it so rarely did, but there was something about Pine and his shadowed jaw that made her want to hit it.
“You aren’t safe. You never were.” She fought to keep her voice low, directing her next words to Sledge. “Why do you stay here? The only way to evade Aric is to keep moving.”
“If you’d like to keep moving, be our guest.” Pine cast an arm out wide.
She ignored him, holding her focus on Sledge. “You must know this village is an illusion. And it won’t last.”
“Enough.” Sledge commanded the space with a single word. “We aren’t going anywhere,” he said to Caledonia, and turning to Pine, he added, “and she stays.”
That was the end of it. Sledge turned on his heel and left the tent with Triple following in his wake. Caledonia’s head buzzed faintly, and looking at Pine made it worse. She shouldn’t care so much. She was grateful to the Blades, but the instant she found an opportunity to get back on the water, she intended to do so. She would find her crew. It didn’t matter to her what the Blades did or didn’t do.
Pine took a small step toward her, coming close enough that she could feel heat radiating from his body. He didn’t speak, didn’t touch her, didn’t do anything but look into her eyes, and there she saw Pine the Bullet lurking just beneath the surface. The violence in his past was within easy reach, and he wanted her to know it.
“I see you,” she whispered.
He blinked, and for a second his features were kissed by sadness. Then he nodded almost imperceptibly and left.

CHAPTER SEVEN
“Wake up, Caledonia.” The voice was hushed and very near her shoulder.
Caledonia opened her eyes to a dark tent lit by a small, handheld sun pip. Triple crouched near, the blue light giving her tawny skin a cool glow.
“What’s wrong?” Caledonia kicked her blanket away, senses skimming quickly toward battle. “Colonists? Bullets?”
“Neither.” Triple paused. “Or both. There’s something I need to show you. Get up.” She dropped her sun pip on the cot and left the tent.
