- What’s next on your reading list?
Thanks to my friend and agent, Erin Murphy, and the entire EMLA family. I will always be grateful to Erin for setting me on this incredible journey. One I never thought possible.
A big part of this book is how we can make our own family. Often the people closest to us are not in our lives because of blood ties. So, I’d like to thank:
Susan Rheaume, who was my friend back when we started dating our two guys as fifteen-year-olds and later stood by each other as we each got married. You have always told me that if I need anything, you’ll be there in a heartbeat, and you know that’s reciprocal. You are caring, loyal, and funny. In fact, you are so many wonderful things, but know that among those, you are loved.
Kathy Martin Benzi, who is a treasure. Of you, I have countless memories of fun times and long laughs. You were one of my early examples of what it means to really support someone. To be a true friend. In college, when I needed someone to listen and help me figure out both my past and my future, you were there. You still are. “Hey, Kath . . . can I ask you something?” :-) You are incredible. Love you tons.
Judy and Fran Miller: When we met thirty years ago, I could’ve never imagined that one day I’d love you like you’re my mom and dad. As a young teacher and mom, you held up a mirror, insisting that I had something special to offer this world. This whole author thing has come as quite a big surprise to me; I know it would not have happened without the two of you.
Both SCBWI and SCBWI New England are a blessing. I have met many cherished friends and mentors through these groups. Being a part of both filled a void I didn’t know was there. Forever grateful. Special shout-out to Sally Riley, our RA in New England; you have supported and guided so many of us, always leading with that wonderful heart of yours.
Special love and gratitude to Jenny Bagdigian, Liz Goulet Dubois, Cameron Rosenblum, and Julie True Kingsley for being early readers, steadfast supporters, and darn good friends. Ronan would never call you “sandwich friends” or hammerhead sharks.
When Esme first introduced herself to me, I recognized the wisdom and hearts of Janet Bates and Dr. LaQuita Outlaw. You two helped me create Esme. Thank you for this; I love her.
More love and gratitude for these creative friends who have inspired and supported me: Patricia Reilly Giff, Leslie Connor, Katherine Applegate, Laurie Smith Murphy, Jennifer Thermes, Erin Dionne, Kat Yeh, Jeanne Zulick Ferruolo, Elly Swartz, Hayley Barrett, Kristen Wixted, Brook Gideon, Lucia Zimmitti, Kate Lynch, Linda Crotta Brennan, Hayley Barrett, Audrey Dubois, Pam Vaughan, Mary Pierce, Carlyn Beccia, Kristine Asselin, Tony Abbott, Jane Yolen, Heidi Stemple, Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, Nora Laley Hansen, and Jane Bowditch Holtz.
Thanks to the Cape Playhouse in Dennis, Massachusetts—especially Michelle Kazanowski for her generosity with tours and interviews and for letting me attend acting and improv lessons.
