He dons a pair of sunglasses from his pocket. Opens the door, cringing against the light outside. Holds out his hand behind him:
PASTOR ROCK: Who’s with me?
GIB and SUZANNE and the PASTOR, hand in hand, make an exit, all blinded by the light.
PASTOR ROCK: On into tomorrow!
Lights dim. By low illumination, players move slowly into position for Scene 3.
Act II
SCENE 3
Lights up on the downstairs. Two hours later. GRANDMA and MARIGOLD at the dining table, BRO in the recliner unconscious, CASS passed out on the floor.
Front door still open, light streaming in.
TV sings a Heartache Song:
TV:
All your promises, the things you said,
Using grand words like eternity and love.
You told me together we would see the end of time.
You told me together we would watch the last star fall.
The horrible thing is you meant it.
The awful truth is you meant every word.
My heart breaks for anybody saying those words tonight.
My heart breaks for anybody listening.
GRANDMA stares outside dreamily as the music plays. The song ends. She stares harder and harder at something outdoors.
GRANDMA: Lord, look at this coming. Oh my Lord, she’s shining in the sunlight.
MARIGOLD too stares in wonder.
MARCY enters slowly.
A big girl in a peasant blouse and tie-dyed floor-length skirt hung with innumerable tiny mirrors. Made up spectacularly like the goddess of death, Kali: black hair with fake jewels in it and sequins and absolutely all that stuff.
Her skin is dyed bright blue and her eyeshadow is red and her mascara is silver and gold.
She paces very carefully forward.
Bells dangle from the hem of her glittering skirt. She moves slowly, as if trying not to ring them, but rings them anyhow with a slight bump and grind at the end of each pace.
She carries a drawstring purse as if it were something quite special.
She wears well-used farm-type work shoes.
She stops before the television.
MARCY: Wow. Uh-oh. Your TV isn’t going to work unless you fix it.
TV: Ass! Penis! Penis! Ass!
MARCY: It works a little bit, though. That’s something, at least.
TV: I’m down, but I’m not out!
MARCY takes a seat in a stray dining chair in the center of the room.
Pause.
GRANDMA: What are you so smug about, young lady? What’s got you sitting there like the queen of I don’t know what?
MARCY: Don’t you see me?
GRANDMA: I see you gloried up like a Hindu. In danger of setting a fire with yourself just sitting there. (Pause.) Who are you?
MARCY: Marcy.
Pause.
I’m really just Marcy.
GRANDMA: Marcy who? (Pause.) Are you with the Social Services?
MARCY: No. I’ve seen them though. I’ve talked to them. A lot.
GRANDMA: I believe you have. I would think you’d have a great deal to say to each other. Where’d you come from?
MARCY: I came from Redding…I bought this dress and got a spiritual makeover. Her name was Jasmine Daylight. I got it from Jasmine Daylight. A makeover to bring out my beautiful spirit and let it dance. And a dress for my beautiful spirit to dance in. But it’s hot. Because I still have my jeans on underneath. (Pause.) Bro is asleep, it looks like.
