PASTOR ROCK:
Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy loving-kindnesses;
For they have been ever of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth,
Nor my transgressions:
According to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’s sake, O Lord.
Good and upright is the Lord: Therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
For thy name’s sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
…I now pronounce you husband and wife.
Lights come up as:
GIB: I may now kiss the bride?
PASTOR ROCK: Buddy, you can do whatever you want to her. (Apologetic:) Just let me get on home to my own darn wife. Here now. Sign this. This is what counts.
BRO: You just married the wrong people to the wrong people.
BRO eases himself down onto the floor. Meanwhile GIB and SUZANNE sign the marriage certificate:
BRO: Good night…
PASTOR ROCK: Just here.
BRO: The entire universe can kiss my ass…
PASTOR ROCK: Now the Mrs. Yes…
BRO: We a long way from Hell. But I can still smell the smoke…
Meanwhile, MARIGOLD enters fully and looks down on BRO and nudges him with her toe, then CASS.
MARIGOLD (to CASS): Long time no see. Hi, Cass!
CASS (head down, immobile): Sis. Sis. Good old Sis. Sis.
MARIGOLD: Congratulations, lovebirds.
GRANDMA: Many happy returns!…No. That’s not what I mean…
GIB AND SUZANNE: Thank you, thanks. Thank you.
About to leave, PASTOR ROCK opens the door and quickly slams it shut.
PASTOR ROCK: Uh-oh.
SUZANNE: What did you see there?
PASTOR ROCK (shaken): I open the door and all I see is—midair. Nothing to stand on. It’s like a cartoon.
BRO (on the floor): Oh yeah!
PASTOR ROCK: And everything’s all shimmery, like a mirage. You can see right through the cars.
GRANDMA: And it’s colored all funny, like silk.
PASTOR ROCK: Yeah. Yes, ma’am…Who told you?
GRANDMA: It’s like that every day. It’s the sunrise.
PASTOR ROCK: And there were angels or eagles or—coming down from the sky. Huge creatures with wings.
GRANDMA: That’s just crows.
MARIGOLD: Sometimes. Or gulls.
PASTOR ROCK: With a ten-foot wingspan?
MARIGOLD: Magnified sort of by the sunrise and thermals and mist and all—like a lens.
The PASTOR cracks the door, slams it shut, blinded.
PASTOR ROCK: Let me get this straight. Every day about this time you can open your door and see the whole world changed into another planet?
GRANDMA: Almost. Nine days out of ten I’d say.
PASTOR ROCK: Wow. What do you pay for rent?
GRANDMA. It’s government subsidized.
PASTOR ROCK: I just meant it’d be extra, you’d think.
BRO (on the floor): I wouldn’t pay one dime extra for midair and mirages.
PASTOR ROCK: Well, all right! “What man is he that feareth the Lord? Him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.”
