CASS: Yeah. Dad’s…upstairs.
BRO: Where is he? (Pause.) Really? Is he “upstairs”?
CASS: Yeah…Around sundown he was saying everything was beautiful.
BRO: “Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful…excuse me, everything’s so beautiful I’m gonna put on these silver-tinted sunshades and spend three months in bed impersonating Roy Orbison.” That’s who you’re turning into.
GRANDMA’S VOICE: Hon? Cass?
BRO: And meanwhile Dad is turning into her.
GRANDMA’S VOICE: Here you go, hon.
BRO: Jesus Christ.
BRO. hides behind the couch.
BRO: Don’t snitch me, boy.
GRANDMA enters with CASS’s clothes clean and folded.
GRANDMA: Warm from the dryer! (As he dons his shirt:) Are these your only clothes? Oh, Cass. Don’t you have any others?
CASS: I got a box of stuff at my buddy’s place. Bob Cornfield. He’s a good old boy. He’s my sponsor in the AA.
GRANDMA: Let’s get the eleven o’clock news. Long as you’re up. Are you up?
CASS: Up as long as you are, Grandma.
He hands her the remote.
She settles into the recliner. CASS gets his jockeys on, dressing under the blanket, and restocks the pockets of his pants with items he’s kept on the arm of the hide-a-bed: pocket knife, notebook, wallet, etc. Meanwhile:
GRANDMA: The Channel Four news. Pray they start with the political campaigns. If they start with the politicians, you know there’s no big disasters to speak of. If they can’t find anything more horrible to show you than some corrupt liar. If they start off with Jerry Brown especially. Oh! Goodness! Have you been drinking?
CASS: No, ma’am!
GRANDMA: Something smells like wine.
She puts her face in her hands very briefly and then raises it.
GRANDMA: What are we doing here?
Pause. CASS snags a butt from the ashtray and gets it lit while:
CASS: I’m waiting for a bed.
GRANDMA: Hon, you’re on a bed. Wait no more.
CASS: A bed in rehab.
GRANDMA: Rehab? Rehab somewheres in Arabia? Rehab. (Pause.) Rehab in Persia?
CASS: Rehab on Idaho Avenue. The Starlight.
GRANDMA: The Starlight Motel?
CASS: The Starlight Recovery Center. They made it into a rehab.
GRANDMA: Who did? A-hab the A-rab?
DAD enters from upstairs.
DAD: What?
GRANDMA: He’s going to Arabia on Idaho. At the Starlight.
DAD: You lost me. Who’s stealing my Kools?
CASS: This is a butt.
DAD: It is now.
CASS: It was when I tuned it up, Boss. Ask Grandma.
GRANDMA: Give the poor feller one entire smoke. He’s your boy and he’s come home.
DAD: Home from where?
CASS: Well—home from down around home, Dad. I was back in Odessa a little while.
DAD: What was that like?
CASS: Nothin’. I didn’t remember as much as I thought. It’s just a place. Except the smells.
DAD: What smells?
CASS: Just everything. The smells kept taking my mind back to the past. (Pause.) And I was over in New Mexico some, just a week or so. Phoenix, Arizona…Las Vegas, Nevada…
DAD: Vegas. I sold my wedding ring in Las Vegas. My first one…
