“We know it’s last minute, and we’ll try to market it the best way we can. We’ll promote it on all social-media platforms. Can you be at the arena at five today? That’ll give you a few minutes to practice before going on.”
“Of course. This sounds amazing. Just tell me where and I’ll be there,” Annie said.
Lizzy slid a laminated pass at her. “This will get you in the VIP parking lot and into the arena. Head to the south entrance and show them this. Here’s my number. Just text when you’re there, and I’ll send one of my assistants to get you. You’ll take the stage at seven thirty and will have a twenty-five-minute set. Fast Cars will perform after you. You’re more than welcome to stay backstage during the concert, and we’ll give you VIP seats for your family and friends. How many tickets would you like?”
Annie sat back and looked at Charley. “What are you doing tonight?”
“I’m going to watch my best friend open for Bristol Baines tonight. That’s what I’m doing.” Charley put her arm around Annie and gave her a side hug. “I’m so happy for you, Annie. This is such an amazing opportunity.”
“I’d love to take my sister and niece,” Annie said. She turned to Bristol. “Peyton just turned five. She has headphones for concerts.”
“Why don’t we give you four backstage passes, and everyone can either take a seat in VIP or stay backstage. And we can give everyone ear plugs,” Bristol said.
“I’m so honored. Thank you so much. I look forward to tonight and tomorrow,” Annie said.
“Let’s get a picture of you two together so I can start promoting,” Lizzy said.
“Try to blur out the background. I know it’s a mess,” Charley said.
“No worries. We’ll just do closeups,” Bristol said. She removed her hat and shook out her hair. “I picked a bad day to not wear a lot of makeup.” She stood when Annie did, and they moved toward one another, cautiously and shyly. “Do you mind if I put my arm around your shoulders?”
“I don’t mind at all,” Annie said.
Bristol felt a slight quiver when she touched Annie. Honestly, she wasn’t sure if it was her or Annie who shook. Maybe it was both of them. Bristol smiled because, of course, the All-American girl would smell like cinnamon and apples. “I’m sorry this is so last minute. We’re normally very organized.”
Annie’s straight white teeth peeked out when her full red lips blossomed into a smile. “I get it. Sometimes babies want to get here sooner than we’re ready for them. I feel for your friend, Ali.”
