Bristol sighed. “It wasn’t just that. I was a young sixteen, and she was a very advanced nineteen-year-old. She dated me to get me to do everything her father wanted. Once more contracts were signed and tours were mapped out, she dumped me. Annie, she preys on people. I know you can make your own decisions, but you need to know that about her. I don’t think she’s changed. I think she’s gotten bolder.”

Annie took a step closer. “I appreciate your advice about Sterling, and I believe you, but I’m also an adult. I won’t sign anything unless I’m absolutely sure. Also, I have a pretty good lawyer who won’t steer me wrong.” She took another step closer. If she wanted to, she could reach out and gently pull Bristol closer, but she didn’t. “I came here because I want you to know that I have no desire to start a personal relationship with her, contrary to the stupid tabloids. The hand-holding thing was dumb, and I couldn’t pull away fast enough.” She put her hands on her chest to emphasize her words. “I wanted you to know because you understand better than anyone that people are quick to assume things on social media and tabloids.” Annie saw Bristol’s shoulders relax as the truth sank in. The sense of relief almost made her cry. For some reason, having Bristol on her side meant more to her than impressing a major record label. “The kiss was a complete surprise. I told her that I didn’t want her to get the wrong impression.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

Annie wanted to rant about how unfair it was and how social media was having a field day with it, but her relationship with Bristol was new, and Bristol was still skittish. “But I also want you to know that she invited me to Top Shelf’s suite to watch the rest of the concert and meet some people tonight.” Bristol stiffened but nodded.

“I get it. It’s important to at least hear them out,” Bristol said.

Annie put her hand on Bristol’s arm. “Thank you for understanding. Record business aside, Sterling isn’t my type.”

“Oh?”

“No. I prefer women who are sweet and honest.” Annie took Bristol’s hand and was struck by how much different touching her felt than touching Sterling. Bristol was warm, and her fingers were strong from playing instruments for years. She felt safe holding Bristol’s hand. Sterling had thin, bony fingers that were cold and uncomfortable to hold.

“How do you know Sterling’s not sweet and honest?”

“Because you don’t like her. And you’re always truthful,” Annie said.

Bristol leaned closer. Annie licked her lips, hoping that Bristol would press her full lips against hers. They were finally going to kiss. Her heart jumped in anticipation.
