The impact of the bullet tore through O’Hara’s chest and hurled him backward against the desk. The gun flew from his hand and clattered near Ethel’s feet. O’Hara’s expression of surprise remained as he slid to the concrete floor.
Lisa kept her gun on him. “Ethel, you and Mrs. Finch step farther away.”
Ethel nudged Susan to move but held her own ground. She shook her head and said, “Let me at least try to stem the bleeding.”
She knelt beside O’Hara. His eyes blinked rapidly. His breath gurgled. “She shot me,” he whispered, as much to himself as to the others. Then the blinking stopped. And the breathing stopped.
Ethel stood. “He’s gone.”
Lisa stepped closer, still keeping her pistol on O’Hara. “Did you give him Finch’s key?”
“No. The KryptoFold’s still in the car with Jesse and Davie. How did you find us?”
Lisa dropped her pistol to her side. “Hauser gave me a tracking device to put on your car. He thought you knew more than you were telling.”
“And have you called for backup?”
“Yes. As soon as I saw Ed O’Hara at the door. Now I need to take custody of the KryptoFold and computer.”
Ethel said nothing. She stood motionless, listening.
The distant hum of an airplane became audible above the patter of rain on the roof.
“So, your backup’s a plane?” Ethel asked.
“I don’t know what that is. Maybe Hauser’s sending a helicopter. But the Parker case is a Bureau case, and I insist you turn everything you have over to me.”
Ethel bent over and picked up O’Hara’s gun by the barrel. “Or you’ll do what? Shoot me? You see, Lisa, we know at least three people had to be involved in the counterfeit-currency-for-Bitcoin scam.”
“Yes. Hauser and I think it’s Douglas Gray. He worked with both Norwood and O’Hara. And he wasn’t in his room the night Norwood was killed.”
“A logical line of inquiry. But where is Douglas now?”
“What do you mean?”
“If this is the last hurrah for the rogue team, why isn’t he here for the rendezvous?”
“I don’t know.”
Ethel shook her head. “Sure you do. Because you’re the third member. That plane is coming for you. You and O’Hara. Only you shot him just like you shot Norwood.”
Lisa’s face hardened. She swung her pistol to Ethel. “Drop the gun, and just give me the damn KryptoFold and key.”
