Susan gave the chair a gentle push to start its momentum. When the raindrops hit his face, Davie wheeled faster for the shelter of the umbrella. Ethel shifted it to make sure he was well covered as she rolled him to the car. Davie smiled when he saw Jesse and climbed out of the chair and into the back seat.
“LEGOs?” he asked.
“When Mommy comes,” Ethel said. “I’ll be right back.” She gave a nod to Jesse and closed the door.
“Well, come on,” O’Hara shouted. “We’ve haven’t got all day.”
“We’ll see how fast you move when you’re seventy-five.”
O’Hara grabbed Susan by the elbow and pulled her clear of the doorway. “Just bring the drive inside.”
Jesse watched Ethel disappear into the hut. He was uncertain what to do if she didn’t return soon. It shouldn’t take O’Hara long to verify Finch’s drive mirrored his computer, and that the ten thousand dollars had been returned to the smaller wallet. He was so fixed on the doorway that he jumped when he heard a light tap on the hood.
Lisa Draper crouched down, using the car to hide all but her head and shoulders. She wore a dark green slicker with a hood. She touched a finger to her lips and then mouthed, “Where’s Ethel?”
Jesse gestured to the hut. Then he lowered his window a crack so that his whisper could be heard. “O’Hara has Susan Finch. He’s released Davie. Ethel’s coming back for Parker’s KryptoFold and a private key. They’ll be exchanged for Susan. But O’Hara will watch from the door. You could be seen at any time.”
Lisa nodded that she understood. Then she broke from her position and ran on tiptoes to O’Hara’s sedan, putting the car between her and the hut. Jesse watched her creep along the side until she had an angled view over the hood through the open hut door. He wished there was something he could do to help her, but Ethel had been explicit in her instructions, so he stayed with Davie.
Inside, O’Hara kept his pistol trained on Ethel. “Set the drive on the desk by the laptop and then step away.”
She did as he ordered. “Mrs. Finch can verify the handwriting on the drive. And you should have seen we used it to re-transfer Bitcoins back to the smaller wallet.”
“And why haven’t you touched the millions?”
“Because that’s evidence. We weren’t after money. We were after murderers.”
“Well, that wasn’t me. I only—”
“FREEZE! FBI!” Lisa bellowed the order from the doorway, where she gripped her pistol with two hands.
Ethel pushed Susan away from the line of fire. O’Hara wheeled around, surprise in his eyes, gun still raised. Without hesitation, Lisa fired. The deafening boom of her pistol rattled the metal walls.
