Matteo opened his eyes to the sounds of his valet preparing clothes in the next room. Memories of his evening with Scarlet filled his mind and welcomed the day. His face broke into the largest, most ridiculous smile he felt sure anyone ever saw on a man lying alone in his bed. Edwards would think him addled if he were to peek his head inside and witness it. But it could not be helped. Discovering that you were in love with a person as glorious as Scarlet deserved a few early-morning smiles. He planned to smile every morning in just such a manner, particularly those mornings that involved her beside him.
Energized at the thought, he jumped out of bed and called, “Edwards. Good morning, Edwards!”
His valet leaned his head through the doorway to his adjoining dressing room. Eyebrows raised, he said, “Good morning, my lord. Shall I ring for breakfast? Or your morning tea?”
“No, thank you, but I feel in great need of an early ride. Could you prepare my riding attire? And then I will change quickly for a bit of breakfast with Lady Cavendish.”
Clearing his throat, Edwards held out a slip of paper. “She had this note delivered early this morning.”
Matteo tried to stop his smile from reappearing but was completely unsuccessful. His goodhearted valet averted his eyes and pretended not to notice. Matteo took the paper from Edwards’s hand and sat at his writing desk.
My Dear Matteo,
I am saddened to be writing a farewell after the perfect evening we had, but it must be so. My dear aunt is ailing, I am afraid, and calls me to the north to attend her. I daren’t refuse, as she is near the last remaining relative I have on this earth. Please continue to feel at home on the estate. I have instructed the servants to attend to you as they would me. I will be thinking of you in each moment and long for the day when I can return. I have sent on my regrets to the prince, but I am sure he expects you and will enjoy your company this morning.
With all my love,
Scarlet
Allowing his hand to drop to his side, he leaned back in his chair, staring out the window.
She left?
He rubbed his face, unsure what to think. He had been certain until this moment that time was his only obstacle to pass before she became his, body and soul. But now . . . She had never mentioned an aunt to him at all, ailing or otherwise.
In all fairness, they hadn’t discussed their families at any great length. He supposed it was because his was all but gone from the earth, and he assumed she would not want to talk about her deceased husband.
