Also, look for brief nods, characters, and ideas found in other stories told in historical France. I have a particular fondness for A Tale of Two Cities and Les Misérables.

And finally, the premise of Scarlet came from the wonderful character and story of The Scarlet Pimpernel. I include specific references, sticking closely to the plot in some scenes, and then I deviate greatly in others. I don’t follow any one particular book of Baroness Orczy’s but dip into many. I may have been influenced by the film adaptations as well as the musical. I am fascinated by this story when it is told in any medium, and I am grateful to add my creativity to the others before me.

About the Author

Jen grew up reading A Tale of Two Cities, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Les Misérables. When she discovered the character of the Scarlet Pimpernel, saving so many from the guillotine, she wished to join him. Imagining a woman doing the same seemed natural from then on. Now an award-winning author, she works to keep important moments in history vibrant and alive through her stories. Her debut novel, The Nobleman’s Daughter, was published in November 2017. A lover of history, romance, and her husband and six children, Jen hikes, skis, and once greeted a turtle under the water by grabbing his fin.
