  56. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I feel unsteady on Mom’s sandals. The heel isn’t even that high, but I wish they were flat. The strap around my ankle is starting to leave a blister, and now I’m really tempted to leave, but I spot Victor running up to me through the barbecue smoke, and the whole thing looks like a scene in a telenovela. The romantic lead coming to the rescue.

He’s in a white shirt and black jeans, a red flannel jacket wrapped around his waist, and Converse on his feet. It’s so strange seeing him in something other than our school uniform that I almost don’t recognize him. A piercing glints in his eyebrow.

“You look beautiful,” he says a little out of breath when he reaches me, taking a timid step closer.

“You look very handsome yourself,” I say with a smile.

And then we’re silent.

He looks at me like he’s waiting for me to say something. But when I try to break the ice, he starts talking at the same time. We both chuckle. I don’t think this can get more awkward. Maybe I’m not meant to go on dates after all...

“Go ahead,” I encourage him to speak first.

“I was just saying I’m sorry I left you waiting. They needed me to help out at the grill last-minute, but my friend will sub for me now,” he says. “I’ll make sure you get a full supply of espetinhos tonight.”

“That’s alright.”

“I actually was so nervous to ask you out.” He takes a step closer. “I couldn’t believe it when you said yes.”

I don’t know what to say.

Victor then stretches his hand out to me.

I stare blankly. And the realization that I am on a date hits me full force.

I think he can sense my hesitation. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I’m so confused. I like Victor. Well, I want to like Victor. He’s a good guy. This isn’t a bad thing...going on a date with him.

What would Pedro think if he saw us holding hands?

I take Victor’s hand in a hurry, running from my thoughts.

I can hardly hear a word Victor is saying while he guides me through the party, showing me the food booths and games his classmates have put together.

There’s a lot going on at once, like stepping onto carnival grounds. Students set off fireworks. People dance around the bonfire. Lines stretch in front of the booths. It’s dizzying.
