  55. EPILOGUE
  56. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I slip out of the gym with the excuse to call Seu Alcino, the cab driver who was close friends with Grandma, but I take the chance to catch my breath outside. I lean against the giant heart-shaped prop where couples have been taking photos all night.

What’s wrong with me? I’m on a date with the nicest guy in the world, and all I can do is resent the fact that Pedro Molina wasn’t the one who asked me out?!

After calling Seu Alcino, Victor joins me outside and we make our way to the front gate to wait.

“Tell Cintia I’m sorry for leaving early?” I say, a little embarrassed. “I don’t know why the smoke is bothering me so much tonight.”

Victor is silent for a moment, deep in thought. “Lari, I feel like I messed up somehow.”

“What, no. Tonight was perfect.” I pat him on the arm. “Thank you for inviting me.”

“You’re a great person.” He stands in front of me, looking like he’s about to get on his knee and propose or something. “I’d like to hang out with you more often, if you want. Maybe... Maybe go on a proper date? You and me? Go somewhere people don’t make you sad.”

I’m so startled by his words, I take a step back.

“I understand you’re graduating this year,” he adds, quickly, “and you have the vestibular to focus on, but if you give me a chance, I’d consider myself so lucky.”

Never in one million years I’d have thought Victor would have asked me to go on a second date.

A second date would feel like we’re officially dating. I think.

I’ve never dated anyone. I’ve never even kissed anyone. If I could pick the person I’d like to have these experiences with, I’d hope it could be him. Victor is kind, thoughtful, and he kept my secret even before I confessed it. He wants to make sure I’m somewhere people don’t make me sad. I know he would never make me sad.

But, if I’m honest, I just don’t think I’m interested in him this way.

“I’m sorry...” I say. His expression falls, and I feel horrible for disappointing him.

“I understand.”

“I think you’re a great person, too, but I... I don’t see us becoming anything other than friends.”

Victor gives me a self-conscious smile. “That’s okay. I’m glad we’re friends.”

I still feel terrible, though. Victor opens his arms for a hug, and I step into them. It’s a little awkward but nice. It’d kill me to lose his friendship. He already means a lot to me.
