  14. THE BEGINNING

‘I remember that the strange woman had said that there is fear ahead. The skies, waters and winds will not like what will happen in that moment.’ She repeated what Wardatul Sa’adat had said with more comprehensible expressions for her mother—‘That moment when you taste each other’s soul it will become intolerable for the winds, the waters and the skies.’ Darakhshan kept gaping at her daughter. One could sense how worried she was from her expression. Hina told her mother that she laughed a lot when the lines were said. She woke up from her dream because of her laughter and she realized that she was sleeping on a rock near Haji Ali. Hina’s laugh had offended that strange woman and she cried out, ‘There is darkness, darkness all around. You will vanish into this darkness.’ No sooner had the woman vanished after saying that than there was darkness all around. She had never seen such deep darkness before. She wanted to run towards Haji Ali but she could not see anything at all, although she had seen lightning in that darkness. She has constructed this part of the story keeping in mind what Wardatul Sa’adat had said, ‘I cannot see anything. There is darkness all around. There is lightning and rainfall.’ Darakhshan was listening intensely. Hina told her that since she had first seen the dream it kept coming back to her mind again and again. A fear had established itself in her heart. Darakhshan picked up her knife and started chopping the ladies’ fingers and said, ‘I will talk about this dream with Peer Sahib on Monday.’

One week later when Darakhshan returned after visiting Peer Sahib, she seemed quite happy. She told Hina that he had interpreted the dream to be a signal of the spiritual powers of the Baba. Hina asked, ‘What kind of signal?’

Darakhshan told her that it was a signal of an impending calamity, so she should visit the shrine of Haji Ali at least once a week at the time of lobaan which would create a circle of safety around her and would keep her away from any mishap. She wanted to laugh at her mother’s simplicity but realized that she might hurt her emotions. So, she decided to obey what her mother had instructed. She really liked the advice. This would give her an excuse to take a stroll every week by the sea. She immediately agreed and said that since her college was off on Saturdays, she would visit the dargah on Saturday evenings. Darakhshan looked at her daughter adoringly and blessed her.
