  14. THE BEGINNING

While sitting in the taxi, this thought had not reached the depths of her heart as her mind, heart and soul were still at peace because of the feeling of love. This thought converted the feeling of love into melancholy. The depression caused by this numbed her mind. That was why she kept a handkerchief over her mouth and let the restlessness of her heart convert itself to tears. Her tears collected behind the rims of her eyes but were not falling. As a result, her neck hurt, and her throat had swollen up. In that moment she started reminiscing about some old things which otherwise made a person sad. It is believed that when the soul is saddened a sort of darkness covers the self. In such a situation monologue with one’s own self creates a chaos in the melancholy of the soul. Hina’s monologue made her want to cry even more. When the dam of courage was broken by the flood of melancholy, she succumbed herself to weeping bitterly.

Her house was near Maulana Azad Road, but she knew her mother would become suspicious if she went home in that condition. Hence, she kept roaming about randomly for a while. She bought an ice cream to moisten her throat and started walking home.

She warmed up her food on reaching home and ate it on the sofa. When Darakhshan asked her about her visit to Haji Ali, she gave appropriate answers. She had been visiting the dargah every Saturday for the last month on her mother’s bidding. The reason was that the day she had told Wardatul Sa’adat’s predictions to Vidhi and had decided to share them with her mother as well. After her return from the educational trip, Hina told her mother who was chopping vegetables in the hall that evening, ‘I want to talk to you about something important.’
