  14. THE BEGINNING

While relating stories of her past, Hina told her friend that for the last six months she had been feeling that she was able to understand her father better and hence had no complaints against him. In fact, the changes that Hina was seeing in her father were not just unimaginable but also unbelievable. She told Vidhi that there had been a transformation in Yusuf’s thought process, religious beliefs, conversational patterns, reading and behaviour. He now seemed to possess a very creative mindset and a positive thought process. She elaborated on each and every small transformation that she had witnessed in her father. This was very weird and interesting for Vidhi. She felt the desire to meet Yusuf. Till now she thought that Hina’s father was very influential, but through these accounts she felt that Yusuf ’s personality had a kind of uniqueness and complexity. Respecting a personality is one thing but being curious and intrigued by it is another. Yusuf seemed to be very attractive. Hina found it unusual that Vidhi wanted to meet Yusuf so badly. She promised her that she would talk to Yusuf and get him to meet her at his shop in Fort or at home soon. In fact, she also told Vidhi that till now she herself had not seen the shop.

In August, the college’s department of history announced a history trip to Aurangabad. Vidhi and Hina decided to go on this trip. But when Hina asked Darakhshan, she was denied permission. That night Hina called Yusuf and asked him to meet her. Yusuf told her that he would visit the house in a few days. Hina told him about Vidhi and how she wanted to meet him. At the end, it was decided that he would pick them up from the college the next day.

Hina told Vidhi in college that she had spoken to Yusuf at night and that he would come to pick them up in the afternoon. Vidhi was glad since Yusuf had become a star of sorts for her. When Yusuf rolled down the car window, Vidhi could not smile because of the astonishment on her face. Even after sitting in the car, she remained silent as usual. She herself did not know the reason behind her silence. When the car stopped at the Churchgate signal, Yusuf turned back to talk to them. Hina gave a brief introduction of Vidhi and told Yusuf that she wrote poems in English. Yusuf greeted her warmly. Vidhi expressed her gratitude. Yusuf parked his car in the enclosure of a beautiful three-storey building which was not very far from the university. The moment Hina came out of the car her eyes caught a black-and-white board on the first storey. On the board in simple calligraphy was written ‘Land of Chinawina’.
