  14. THE BEGINNING

Wardatul Sa’adat talked to Hina about her future academic and career plans and shared information about her college as well as the course she was pursuing. Wardatul Sa’adat gave some important advice and information to Hina and also shared her email address with her so that they could stay in contact in the future. Hina had an email address but due to lack of use had forgotten it. She promised to send an email as soon as she started a new account. Wardatul Sa’adat felt the need to have more tea and asked Hina if she would like some too. Hina said she would. Wardatul Sa’adat placed the order and went to the bathroom. Hina’s eyes fell on a book kept on the pillow. Its title was The Book of Shadows. The cover had a pentagon made on it, behind which was a striking portrait of a woman with smoke coming out of her palms and an owl sitting on her shoulder. In her heart she really wanted to touch the book, but she controlled herself. As soon as Wardatul Sa’adat entered the room, Hina turned and asked her about the theme of the book. She picked it up and extended it to Hina and said that for the past one year she had madly wanted to become a Wiccan and this book was based on the theme of Wicca.

Wicca was a new word for Hina. On further inquiry, the entire history, ideology, perspectives, historiography about the Wiccan and pagan religions and their magical legacy were summarized by Wardatul Sa’adat. In between, tea was served. They talked about Wicca over tea as well. This topic seemed very interesting to Hina. Hina shared that her mother thought someone had used magic on Yusuf. Wardatul Sa’adat paused for a moment and then claimed that it was impossible for any magic to work on Yusuf. Hina asked the reason. Wardatul Sa’adat said that Yusuf himself seemed like a possessor of magical powers. This statement was hilarious to Hina. Seeing her laugh, Wardatul Sa’adat completed her sentence, ‘My mother only trusts Yusuf in this entire world.’

After tea, Wardatul Sa’adat took out a calendar-like frame from her bag, which she spread on the floor.

She looked at Hina and said, ‘Tell me what your wish is.’

Hina thought for a while and said, ‘I want to see my mother happy.’

Wardatul Sa’adat closed her eyes and chanted something, then kept her index finger on the frame. She opened her eyes and said that nothing was possible for the next one year, after which if Hina was able to fulfil the duties that her mother gave her, something could happen. Hina felt good on hearing this. She smiled and said that she would definitely do what her mother said.
