  14. THE BEGINNING

Burashid had already inspected the perfumes before Yusuf came. An hour passed in the conversation and no one noticed. Yusuf asked permission to leave. Burashid took out a packet from his pocket and gave it to Yusuf. Yusuf kept it in his pocket. Burashid asked him to count the money. Yusuf smiled. When he was leaving, Aymal came to him and said that she would give details about the party over the phone. That night, while in bed, Burashid described his Delhi tour to Aymal. Aymal told him that Yusuf had no opposition to their beliefs and if they worked hard on him, he might be able to play an important role in propagating their ideology in Mumbai in the future. After hearing that, Burashid asked whether it would be okay to invite Yusuf to the party in the presence of high-profile people and ambassadors. Aymal said that Yusuf was an innocuous man. His presence might in fact be useful. The collective could taste the freedom of his soul and this in turn would help him to free his soul of the ‘enemy’ beliefs within him.

Burashid visited Mumbai three days before the party. He invited Yusuf to a hotel. They stayed together for three hours. During this time, Burashid tried to learn about Yusuf’s religious beliefs. Yusuf answered in such a fashion that it seemed religion did not matter to him much. He, in fact, said that religion was one of the major causes of bloodshed in this world. Burashid told him about his own beliefs and that of his collective, who had already gained freedom from the idea of God and were in favour of spending their lives according to their own will. Yusuf knew of those things that Burashid was not able to convey. He was smiling in his heart at Burashid’s innocence.

Yusuf said that he would be happy to be a part of that group. Then Burashid said that apart from the important work, he had also come to invite Yusuf to the party, though Aymal had already informed him this over the phone.

He thanked Burashid.

Burashid told him that some people were coming from Delhi to Mumbai to be a part of the party. They would stay at the Taj Residency till the evening. After telling him about their occupations and designations, Burashid told Yusuf that they would join the party as common people. This way, their presence would remain a secret.

The next day, at seven in the evening, Burashid introduced Yusuf to those people.

After briefly exchanging greetings, they left for Khandala.

An Indian couple sat in Yusuf’s car. They were above fifty. During the journey, Aymal was on his mind. He was not able to comfortably hold a conversation with that couple.

Two days after the party, he returned to Mumbai with the guests. He bid farewell to them at the hotel and went straight to his house.
