“Nothing tiny about it.” Lopez stepped up to the side of the bed, leaned forward, and kissed him lightly on the cheek.
“Hey, I’m a married man.” He raised an eyebrow at Lopez. “What was that for, anyway?”
“For saving our lives,” Lopez smiled. “You were amazing last night.”
“I want to thank you, too, Rome.” Kilburn grinned. “But no kisses from me.”
“There’s a crushing disappointment, Doctor,” Leetch grumbled. He looked over to Cohen. “Forbes is dead, right?”
“Yeah,” said Cohen. “Of course, he never was Forbes, Tyler, or Nick Snider, as his most recent ID claimed. When they ran his prints against the national database, they got a match. Murray Adamwell from Cleveland. Shot his grandfather on a hunting trip when he was fourteen. Did four years of juvenile for manslaughter. Never had an adult record, though.”
“Trained to be a hit man in reform school, I guess,” Leetch grunted and broke into another paroxysm of coughs. “So he had a gun up his sleeve the whole time, huh?”
“Yeah,” Cohen said. “A Jacob’s ladder-type device with a spring release. When Snider tugged on the string looped around his finger, it popped a little three-inch Black Widow revolver into his palm. No doubt it was how he surprised Frigerator.”
“Resourceful bastard, huh?” Leetch sighed.
Cohen nodded. “Snider went to a lot of trouble to rig that explosion in the lab. Cops found two murdered security guards in the stairwell. But he didn’t touch their keycards. Seems he had all the access he needed to enter the building.”
“Martineau!” Leetch snapped. “Where is he?”
Lopez shook her head. “No one knows.”
“Homicide traced the call he made to Lina last night,” Cohen said. “Came from his cell phone. He was a couple of miles from SeptoMed at the time. Somewhere at the foot of Chestnut Street near the Schuylkill.”
A tall nurse in scrubs walked into the room. “Sorry to break up the party, but we need to change Mr. Leetch’s dressing,” she said authoritatively. “You’ll have to come back later.”
“And next time, it wouldn’t kill you to bring some flowers!” Leetch grunted.
“Rome, I spoke to Gina earlier,” Cohen said. “She and Sophie will be here this afternoon.”
“I know.” Leetch’s voice cracked. “Thanks, partner.”
They said their good-byes and headed for the door. “KC!” Leetch called after him. “You keep me in the loop, okay?”
Walking down the hall toward the elevator, Cohen said. “Too bad Neil Ryland was already discharged. I’d like to talk to him again.”
Lopez grabbed Cohen’s elbow. “And how about Andrea Byington and Harvey Abram?”
Cohen nodded. “Let’s start with Byington. Ed is bringing her in to the station now.”
“Good,” Lopez said. “Byington and Martineau seemed a little too cozy when we interviewed them.”
