GREG Fine. It was nice to see you again, too.

STEPH Yeah?

GREG Even after you murdered my groceries … Yes. (Beat.) Is that what you wanna hear?

STEPH That’s a start.

GREG Ok then. (Checks his watch.) It’s almost time for fourth period./ I need to get …

STEPH Greg, fuck./ Can you give me another five minutes here …? Is that possible?

GREG gets to his feet. He isn’t leaving but he’s at least made the gesture. STEPH grabs hold of his arm.

GREG Yeah, sure, I just … (Sits.) Go ahead.

STEPH Look … I walked away one time when that was the last thing I wanted to do, even though you said I should—and maybe you really wanted me to, I don’t know—but I feel like you were that guy for me and I threw it away because it was easier to start over but that’s all you do sometimes when you do that … you just start over, doing the same fucking thing you did before with some other man or woman or … you know? It’s not some big magic trick and life is suddenly all cotton candy by changing partners. I was still me and, and, and here I am, only realizing that now …

GREG I understand what you’re saying, Steph.

STEPH Yeah?/ You do?

GREG Absolutely./ Yes! It’s so hard to really start again … I mean, I’ve just barely begun to do that myself.

STEPH I know, I know, and when I heard that—and it’s not just because you’re with Carly or anything, it’s not—but when that news got to me and I was looking around at my own situation, I thought, “Fuck, he’s with someone. It’s now or never.” I did. That was the phrase I heard in my head … “now or never.”/ I mean, most people, we only get a few chances at this thing. Love. One or two goes at it, even it we’re lucky.

GREG Yeah, but …/ I don’t understand. What’re you asking me here? To … just …?

STEPH looks over at GREG, then slides across to him—letting the gap between them slowly disappear.

STEPH I think we should give it one more try. You and me.

GREG … now? Like … “us” now?

STEPH Yeah, Greg. I’m speaking of the present.

GREG Steph. Stephanie. That’s … shit. What?

STEPH I miss you and I want you back. Please do not make me say this, like, six times …

GREG No, no, I’m just … I am trying to sort it all out in my head./ Because … it’s …

STEPH I know./ I’m an idiot … I fucked this up. (Softer now.) You know it’s good between us, Greg … when it’s working, there is nothing like it./ (Smiles.) You know that.

GREG … yeah./ (He touches her face.) I know.

STEPH (A little tearful.) I miss you. I don’t know how else to say it … I just fucking miss you. That’s all.
