GREG Come on, Kent, it’s not …

KENT I know she has! She always told me about her other boyfriends and shit so obviously she has!/ Measuring us and getting all … fuck!!

GREG No, that’s not …/ She really hasn’t!

KENT Whatever.

GREG … listen … Kent …

KENT Dude, I am just barely holding my shit together here, keeping myself from going after you with, like, karate-chops, so … you need to back off. ’Kay?/ I’m serious.

GREG …/ Do what you gotta do, man.

This could get dangerous but just at the moment where one more word could ruin everything CARLY appears at the door again.

CARLY Hey. (Beat.) You ready?

GREG Yeah.

GREG looks over at KENT, who remains poised. GREG starts to say something, then decides not to. He and CARLY exit.

KENT stands for a long time by himself. Looks like he’s about to smash something but stops himself. Instead, he walks over to the shelf where the trophies of past softball victories stand and picks one up. Stares at it. Studying the little plastic figure that adorns the top.

KENT (To the trophy.) … the fuck are you looking at, dickweed?

He calmly snaps the little player off the trophy and tosses it back onto the shelf.

He returns the trophy to its resting place and walks out. The break room door slams shut.

An outdoor lounge.

STEPHANIE is sitting by herself, holding her keys. She is messing with her touch-screen phone.

After a few moments, GREG shows up. He’s wearing a light sweater and trousers. Carrying a bag. He spots STEPH and goes to her. Sits.

GREG … look at you with the fancy gadget there!

STEPH Yeah. Tim got me this phone so I was checking it out. He likes to go kinda apeshit on the apps, so I was … just …

They look at each other and then STEPH reaches out for a hug. It goes well enough but it’s a little bit awkward.

GREG Anyway.

STEPH Thanks for meeting up./ During work.

GREG Sure./ ’Course. (Beat.) This used to be their “smoking porch,” I guess, but the kids can’t smoke at school now so they just call it “the porch.” Clever, right?

STEPH Yep. (Beat.) Didn’t know if you’d really wanna see me, but hey. I’m glad you did.

GREG Well, sounded urgent, so … I thought … I mean, last time was a little … you know … so I wasn’t sure what to do … but yeah.

STEPH Well, I appreciate it. (Beat.) I’ve been trying to deal with things and, just … whatever. “Live and let live,” I guess.

GREG That’s good.

STEPH Still haven’t talked to Carly but I’m not gonna chase her down in the street, so …

GREG You mean, like you did me …?

STEPH (Smiling.) Asshole.

GREG … kidding … sort of.

STEPH She can’t face me then it’s her problem, I guess. Right?

GREG That’s … (Beat.) I don’t wanna get in the middle of it, so … you know.
